My picks from the list (unordered) would be:

1. Playa Provisions (Really solid restaurant from Top Chef Winner Brooke Williamson. Near the beach in Playa Del Rey. )
2. Ayara Lūk (Sadly this outpost closed, but their original Ayara Thai Cuisine is just around the corner, with many of the same dishes.)
3. Coni'Seafood (Just seafood, and delicious. Think ceviche, aguachiles, camarones 15 different ways, and fish tacos)
4. Three Weavers Brewing Company (They don't serve food, but there are some good local places that you can order and bring into Three Weavers to have with your beer.)
5. Grimaldi's Pizzeria (Solid NYC pizza joint)
6. Front Page Jamaican Grille (One of the best Jamaican grills in the area, and there are a lot.)
7. Humble Potato (Japadog and burger concoctions. A better twist on the local burger joints.)

I'd also add:
a) Kanpai Sushi (A bit expensive for the quality, but if you need a local sushi fix, this would be it.)

Ayara Luk closed but the regular Ayara reopened. Still the best sit-down restaurant to eat within walking distance of LAX.

Most of the places on the Eater list is just too far away from LAX to be considered a real option for someone on a 3 hour layover. A trip to Playa Provision and back to LAX is a solid 2 hour affair.

This is my top 5 pick for solid choices if you are on a normal layover i.e. less than 3 hours. All within walking distance from LAX

1. Ayara (Thai): https://www.yelp.com/search?find_desc=Ayara+Thai+Cuisine&find_loc=Westc hester%2C+CA+90045
2. Kanpai (Japanese - there are two locations... the one I'm referring to is walking distance from LAX about 1 block north of In-N-Out): https://www.yelp.com/biz/kanpai-japa...-2-los-angeles
3. Ramen Joint: https://www.yelp.com/biz/the-ramen-j...sq=ramen+joint
4. In-N-Out: https://www.yelp.com/biz/in-n-out-bu...n-N-Out+Burger
5. Noodle World (Pan-Asian): https://www.yelp.com/biz/noodle-worl...q=noodle+world

If you have a longer layover i.e. 4+ hours, the Eater list overall pretty good and right on the mark for variety and distance/time.

And in addition to having good sushi, Kanpai is also part the Dining Rewards Network,

I went there without even realizing that, and was pleasantly surprised when I got the email saying that I got some extra airline miles.

2019 update:
17 Solid Places to Eat Around Los Angeles International Airport (LAX), 2019 Edition

Dropping off friends at LAX or picking them up is always a chore — enough so that usually passengers departing from or arriving to the giant NASCAR track from hell this city so generously calls airport parking might feel obligated to reward their drivers with a meal. Here's a guide to some places you might want to try in the immediate vicinity of the LAX area before taking off or arriving to LAX.

Removed: Ayara Lūk (closed), Alejo’s Presto Trattoria Italian Restaurant, El Pollo Grande (closed), Front Page Jamaican Grille (closed), il Romanista, Two Guns Kitchen

Added: Cinco, Jame Enoteca, Kirari West Bake Shop, Mutiara Food & Market, Veggie Grill, Woody’s Bar-B-Que
