LAX moves forward with plans for Concourse 0 and Terminal 9
Concourse 0 would be an 11-gate concourse facility east of Terminal 1, while Terminal 9 would be a new 12-gate international and domestic passenger terminal southeast of the Sepulveda/ Century Boulevard intersection.

Here's a link to the LAWA site:
The new concourses/terminals are in green. |
T9 looks like it will have direct access from Sepulveda or Century... that's a plus. Eagle's Nest will have to be removed so T9 can't happen until MSC South is completed and AA is given full use of T5 and 4 preferential gate at TBIT.
C0 is logical concourse extension for T1 but I wonder why LAWA is not building it as a full terminal rather than just a concourse. Looks like there is enough room there for land side access for a full T0 instead of T1C0. One potential problem I see... T9 will not be served by the APM so access to/from rental car facilities, hotels, and transit center will either involve a long walk from the T1/T7 APM station or... wait for it.... more shuttle buses. After T1C0 and T9 is done, LAWA will finally co-located all the airlines (or at least have the space to co-locate them) based on their alliance affiliation under the same terminal clusters. Hypothetical terminal locations:

Very cool. Hope I'm still alive to see it. :D
Love the idea of a Terminal 0. How appropriate for LA. |
So Terminal 0 is the Park N Fly (fka ParkOne) spot? And Terminal 9 the former Delta/Western maintenance hangars?

T9 won't start construction until after MSC South is working because LAWA will have to maintain the same number of gates available for AA to use. https://live.staticflickr.com/7817/4...025c0b24_b.jpg |
I guess it would help with gate crowding issues, and be really useful for connecting passengers (and it'd be cool to see). However even with the expanded APM I worry about how the expansion will impact road traffic for O/D passengers. I'd also hate to be a passenger who somehow ends up booking separate tickets necessitating a transfer between terminals 9 and 0, and decides to make the trip airside ;)
(I know it's not realistic, but given the geographic size of the LA region I do wish one of the other LA area airports was in a location and of such a size that major airlines & alliances could run a decent sized operation or hub, ala the multiple airports serving New York or maybe the DC airports. From my starting points when I'm in SoCal it often takes over an hour just to get to the Sepulveda exit on the 105, and it can take quite a while longer to get from there to the terminals...so I just wish there was a more legitimate second option, particularly for transcon and international travel. In the meantime I suppose anything to improve the passenger experience at LAX is a good thing!). |
Just looking at the proposed roadway improvements and routing, you can basically see that LAWA will discourage people from dropping off and pick up at the terminal curbside. It will be much easier to do the drop off and pick up at the Intermodal Transit Center West (on 98th Street where the city bus center is located now). The key of it all is the APM and frequent service from CTA to ITC.
Basically anyone arriving to LAX from Sepulveda north or south (including I-105) will be routed past the ITC West so its obvious that LAWA want you to use that facility instead of going thru the loop. And although not part of T9 project, I think there is also a similar plan to reroute anyone coming off I-405 or La Cienega north or south past ITC East at Aviation. |
Unfortunately it doesn't look like they're doing anything to alleviate the bottleneck coming northbound through the tunnel, leaving it something of a mess to get to the dropoff from the 105 at peak times. I don't mind moving dropoff to the transit center - it's probably overdue, but the road layout makes it difficult to get to from the 105. A second dropoff center near lot E with an APM or shuttle that has dedicated right of way would improve access a lot from that direction.

If you are coming from the south or I-105, looks like you will have two drop off options without entering the loop:
1. APM station for T9, which will be the most direct route (although the size of the drop off zone is unknown) 2. ITC West on 98th street, which will have ample drop off zone The APM stations are (from west to east): CTA West (T3/TBIT/T4) <--> CTA Center (T2/T5/T6) <--> CTA East (T1/T7/T8) <--> T9 <--> ITC West (hotel & parking shuttle/ride share) <--> ITC East (Metro & city bus/ride share) <--> Consolidated Rental Car Center You still have to go thru the tunnel but you probably won't have to go thru the loop. Unless you are just begging for punishment. |

I think ONT has the most action going on, and I can see based on how much the upgrade lists have grown that people are driving that way, but keeping it a secret.
