Los Angeles Traffic Congestion

Only to people who are world-class cynics. :p

If you avoid the morning & evening commuter times (7-9 am and 4-7 pm M-F)
and pay attention to waze, a traffic enabled GPS, or good radio traffic reports (1070 AM has "traffic on the 5s")

Can an accident or special event tie up traffic? Sure, but LA's big enough that there is almost lways a way *around* the tie-up. Not like the San Francisco Bay area where the bridges and limited major travel routes form unspeakable road blocks.

I kinda agree with CDTraveler. My last trip to LA was mid December and literally at 5:00am on the way to the airport, the traffic was thick as molasses. It was still flowing mostly but there was hardly no room between cars. The person in the back of me was literally inches behind me and as I looked around, it was practically the same for every other lane.

Maybe it's just LA drivers but I've never seen a Interstate/Highway that was so congested at 5:00am. Even to get to the terminals, the departure area was completely gridlocked. I shudder to imagine leaving at "peak time" traffic.

The portion of the 405 near LAX, and the roadways in, around and out of LAX, are about as bad as LA traffic gets. This is rarely a smooth-sailing place.

The drive from the 105 or 405 in to the actual terminal can be horrible at any time of day. But in general the other freeways aroudn LA follow a predictable rush hour pattern.

San Francisco, with most of the rest of the Bay Area, is the fourth-most-congested metropolitan area in the world, and third worst in the United States, according to a new survey.

[...]

The survey was conducted by Inrix, a Seattle company that provides traffic information worldwide. It releases congestion studies annually, calculating how much time drivers lose because of slow-moving traffic.

[...]

Most-congested major world cities
1. Los Angeles
2. Moscow
3. New York
4. San Francisco

I suppose there is some purpose in looking at SF and LA traffic in a general sense, but it's usually far more important to individuals, whether locals or visitors, to consider congestion on their particular routes. As discussed above, the 405 near LAX is really bad, really often. But other journeys in LA aren't that bad. Often surface streets are better than freeways.

And that is a "luxury" that most of the SF Bay Area doesn't have - a myriad of wide parallel surface streets. The distance between bay and hills, or hills and the next hills is typically not very far.
