17 February 2017 [7:40AM] - SNA closing in 20 minutes due to weather...

My wife is sitting on SouthWest waiting for pushback. Told it's 7:50 or cancelled - they are scheduled to be the last flight out.

That's odd because the SNA web site (http://www.ocair.com/) has no alerts posted at this time (8:30 AM) and other flights seem to be adhering to their schedules.

CPRich Feb 17, 2017 9:35 am

What's the reason? Some flights are still shown as Boarding, with flights Departed just a few minutes ago.

But about 50% of all future flights are shown as Cancelled. It looks like most (but not all) AA and WN, with other airlines not showing cancelled (yet?).

EDIT: Just a guess:

High Wind Warning - Wind gusts of 50 to 60 mph are expected from the coast to the valleys and across the deserts. Isolated wind gust reports of up to 75 mph are not out of the question.
Gale Warning - southeast winds increasing to 25 to 35 kt with gusts to 50 kt

An intense winter storm is expected to dump the heaviest rains in 10 to 20 years over Los Angeles and neighboring areas from late Thursday to early Saturday.
Having flown through winds gusting to 40mph+ this week, I would be glad that these are cancelled.

You're right, in fact the departures are still happening. Her flight left OK to SFO, there do seem to be a fair number of cancellations later in the day...

Reason she was told was wind.

It's actually getting fairly breezy here now, I'm about 20 miles away from SNA though and at some elevation, so I cannot speak for the airport at this time.

According to SNA website, all AA flights are cancelled between 9am - 730pm.
LAX still seems to be operating - different weather? Longer runway?

ONT still appears to not have any delays, although I wonder how long that's going to go this afternoon.

I am at Huntington Beach and the wind is certainly picking up here. According to the weather report, it is going to be over 60mph at 1pm at SNA. And the same time, it is only going to be at 32mph at ONT. And 1pm is about when the wind is suppose to peak out. So I guess flights may resume sometime in the afternoon...

I received notice of cancelation for my flight out of Long Beach around 11:00 a.m. today for a 4:30 flight. It's a little gusty, but doesn't seem that bad.

CPRich Feb 17, 2017 6:46 pm

WU currently shows SNA with winds at 25, gusting to 48 (METAR 16022G42KT), plus

Active Advisory: Severe Thunderstorm Warning, Flash Flood Warning, Flash Flood Watch, High Surf Warning, High Wind Warning, Marine Warning, Gale Warning Active Notice: Flash Flood Watch, High Surf Warning
Doesn't sound like flyin' weather.

Long Beach looks nowhere near that bad - 17011G18KT
