I'd use Uber, Lyft or sidecar rideshare services for about $55. If they won't pickup at the airport, have them pick you up at the Green Line station which you can reach with a free shuttle from the terminals.

The flyaway is good for going TO LAX but a whole different story going FROM LAX (be prepared to wait about 2-3 hours for pick up at LAX).

I recommend hiring a private car service. You can find a deal on places like Amazon Local, Groupon, Living Social, etc. for these car services.

I second this suggestion. I have used them numerous times to get from LAX to all over Orange County. They are owned by Prime Time and will give you the same van for a lot less than the actual Prime Time website. $20 for first person and less for additional people. It is a shared van service but in my experience they usually make at most one extra stop. If you are going from home to LAX they are punctual, but if you're going LAX to home then wait time varies, and you may have to wait at the airport for up to an hour if it's not a busy time.

Smile Transporation from LAX to Irvine

Hi There! would love some local help. We are east coasters flying into LAX this coming Tuesday and need to get to Irvine. Problem is we aren't getting in until 7:15PM. If I am reading the Metro Timetable correctly looks like that won't be available for me? Any help on cost efficient ground travel at that time of evening would be great! TIA

There are additional ideas in this thread:
From SNA to LAX
Please bear in mind that the Irvine Flyaway service has been discontinued in 2012.

Two companies that advertise service between LAX and Irvine are ShuttleToLAX and Shuttle one; I have no personal experience with either.

Also try Google transit, but it's a long transit trip (3 hours): Bus to Union Station in DTLA and then Amtrak Pacific Surfliner to Irvine. The $20 shuttle is probably a better option.

Actually, Shuttle2LAX.com redirects to shuttletolax.com.

LAX to Orange County doesn't really work with transit. Just get a shuttle or taxi.
