Hey, maybe it runs in the family. :) Could make for an exciting double date.

La Jolla is beautiful. Have lunch at Georges overlooking the water and enjoy the seals/sea lions, etc.

I'd like to find a good British pub (like the one I met CE at!) here in OC.

Have you ever been to The Olde Ship in Santa Ana? I am a pasty addict and literally have had nothing there but beer and pasties, but the pasties are the best I've found in So Cal.

As for things to do: how active is mom? We have some very attractive yoga instructors in the NB area. My mom isn't very active but my aunts love going to their classes whenever they are in town.

There are Duffy rentals and Hornblower has cocktail harbor tours - are either of those things your mom might enjoy?

Hollywood won't take more than a couple hours. Maybe wind your way back along sunset blvd. If she's a shopper--you could also go to the Grove on the way back. I always see celebs shopping there. I still think lunch at The Ivy on Robertson is such a unique experience ---SO LA with paparazzi out front. Reservation is a must and don't let them seat you in Siberia. ...you want the patio.
Then drive through Beverly Hills. These are all experiences she is not likely to have elsewhere.

Depending on where in Britain she lives, she may have the Ivy experience ticked off the list. I live a few streets away from the original. Never been, of course, because I can't generally make my dinner plans a few years in advance, but I pass it and its attendant celebrities all the time. Apparently celebs don't have to wait until 2017 for their dinner, just us regular, non-DYKWIAs :)

Little bit of an issue. I want to go to the farmers market but can't go Saturday so that leaves Wednesday. Well if I go Wednesday I'd have to ensure what I buy stays cold in my room and also cold Thursday as we do Hollywood. Not exactly ideal.

Thinking of what to do.

Will your hotel not bring a fridge to your room for free/a nominal charge?

Trader Joes has amazing insulated grocery bags. If you leave the food in the room until the last possible moment one of those (or old school cooler) could be all you need to get you through Thursday.

So you are planning on buying stuff to cook 2 days later? It's a good farmers market with some exotic and very fresh produce but honest. ...it doesn't sound very practical to make this a priority for your limited time up in LA. You know your mom best so if you think she'd really love it..then go but maybe not with the intention of buying food to cook. I love markets but I can't see spending hours parking and walking up and down streets when there are so many other things to see.
Is your mom a shopper? I don't think we have much insight into what she likes to do.

In contrast to our recommendations here of what to do with your mom in Los Angeles, here are "12 Things You Should Never Do in LA."

There seems to be some overlap in the "to do" recommendations and the "never do" list.

This is some of the best tourism advice I have ever seen re: Los Angeles and I have lived here my entire life ^

Those are all pretty good.

There are many better, less crowded hikes than Runyon Cyn (go up to the Angeles National Forest if you really want to hike)

Downtown has a lot going on.

I tell everyone who visits that hollywood will be disappointing, and when I go meet them there they a) agree and b) are at hollywood and vine whether it's prearranged or not.

Best underrated thing is the Page Museum/La Brea tar pits (with LACMA right next door)

The Metro train system doesn't have great coverage, but it actually isn't bad for getting around among the places it covers, and it's getting better.

You can jaywalk in Pasadena (except Old Pas). If you stand at the curb in hte middle of a block there's a good chance that traffic will just stop for you (including police, who will cause other traffic to stop).

VickiSoCal May 28, 2015 2:42 pm

There's no need for someone in Irvine to go to Angeles National Forest for a nice hike.

Also we went to the Huntington on Saturday and it was just lovely, I hadn't been in years and had forgotten how nice it is.
