Orange County eateries & watering holes (restaurants & drinking spots)

OC bar/restaurant recommendations:

Restaurants:
Javier's At Crystal Cove on a Friday/Saturday night - great for cougar watching
Scotts - I like this place, others might have different ideas
Crow Burger - Delicious Burgers in Newport
Mesa - Turns into an ok bar/club like vibe on weekend nights, food is good
Tenasian - Fusion restaurant with good food, club next door that seems to be constantly changing names. Popular with the Asian crowd and people that like to party
Cucina Alessa - Italian food in Newport Beach, right on PCH
The Beachcomber - Great view of the Pacific Ocean, right on the beach. Takes reservations and can get a long wait during the day.
Mastro's in Crystal Cove - Excellent steaks and seafood
Beachwood BBQ - Seal Beach
Gulfstream - Great seafood and steaks in CDM
Crow Bar - Gastropub with good drinks in CDM - great eatery AND watering hole
Wildfish in Newport
Thai Nakorn in Garden Grove (no bar)
Tabu in Laguna
Houston's in Irvine (same owner as to Gulfstream)
Bistango in Irvine
Trabuco Oaks Steakhouse in Trabuco Canyon (funky)
Bad to the Bone in San Juan (small BBQ joint)
In-N-Out

Bars (Most in the NB area - sorry, there's nowhere great to drink in Irvine unless you go to the club next to the fusion restaurant):
Mutt Lynch's - Great for watching a game of any sort
Goat Hill - Odd crowd, always tons of fun
The Alley - Drinks at this place are kerosene. Great place to end an already smashed night - take a cab, don't expect to drive
Blackies - I've never left this place sober
Rudy's - Fun crowd, always seem to make new friends there
Main Street in Huntington Beach - Tons of bars, just take your pick... some douchey people though... makes for great people watching
Downtown Fullerton - See above, same statements for "Main Street" apply here

Don't waste your time:
Sharkeez

Consultette - I tried out Crow Burger last night. AMAZING! Had a burger and those incredible duck fat fries. Holy C(r)ow! I'll be back there for sure. Thanks for the info.

I would add Beachwood BBQ in Seal Beach to the list. Great beers and good BBQ too!

I went to Crow Burger on Saturday based on the above and loved my burger. Thanks, Consultette and slevy!

I'm a big fan of Gulfstream in Newport Beach (it's on PCH and Macarthur right before you hit Corona del Mar). Lots of seafood and great steaks. They also have a great bar that is excellent people watching.

Crow Burger Kitchen also owns the Crow Bar (their original restaurant) that is more of a gastro-pub rather than just a burger place.

Yes yes, those are delicious places too! I don't know how I forgot them! I will add them to the first post.

I applaud your efforts and enthusiasm. I fear that this may be almost an impossible task! Do you have criteria that will help narrow down the list that you're looking to build?

E.g., are you looking for exclusively good restaurant with a bar in it? Bars that serve food?

Hon, I live in the area and am not looking for anything - this list is to serve as a reference point for other people who may be visiting. It was stripped out of another thread where I responded to someone's requests for recommendations. Simply trying to log a list of recommended places for anyone who stops by the forum seeking out information.

Then dare I ask... why? We can just link them to Yelp.

Because some of us prefer to be helpful - especially since Yelp is such a mess that you never can tell which reviews are real or planted.

And because the OC is a virtual wasteland when it comes to good restaurants. Not to mention the plethora of small, neighborhood places that barely get reviewed (if they're even listed at all), and have no Internet presence of their own.

Good idea, Consultette.

Passive aggressive much?

I'm sorry, I can't see how a mere listing of restaurants in OC, with no frame of reference/grading system/parameters (but based on an individual's personal preferences irrespective of others opinions) is any less of a "mess" than Yelp.

But I will play along and add to the list.

Thank you mr&mrs! I added them to the list and will have to try "Bad to the Bone"!
