If you are buying the day pass save yourself one transfer and do Green Line to Silver Line. It is "bus rapid transit" (which just means it runs on the freeway), costs more for cash fare but there are no extra charges with a day pass. Get off the Green Line at Harbor/I-105 and go to the bottom level. Buses run every 15 minutes on weekdays, 20 on Saturdays, and 30 on Sundays. The added bonus is that it cruises through Downtown LA at surface level, so you get to see the nicer parts of downtown. Get off at Union Station, cross the street, and you are there.
