We've actually been cross-checking advice from here with a guide book and our latest plan is to hire a car upon arrival at LAX and drive to Palm Springs as PTravel and azepine00 suggest, staying there for one or both nights. Generic "time near the ocean" is probably being ticked off earlier in our holiday, in either Monterey or Carmel as a side-trip from SF (after driving to Big Sur).
Regarding our first stay, appreciate there's not much in Hollywood itself but the hotel was booked with PC points and we're happy to zoom around on the Metrolink while based there :) And Metrolink is our commuter rail service. Metro is our urban rail system. You want to use the Metro to get around LA... not Metrolink  |
With all the advice we received and our own research, our trip is almost completely sorted. Right now it looks like this:
LHR-LAX, Hollywood, LAX-SFO as originally booked. Sunday and Monday (memorial weekend) in SF, then hire a car and drive to Big Sur, staying for 2 nights in Ripplewood Resort cabins. Back up to SF for another couple of days. Fly SFO-PSP late on a Saturday night (arriving just before midnight). Make our own way to LAX from there. We have nothing booked in Palm Springs yet - I guess we'll likely do a tour of Joshua Tree, then drive back to LA either on Monday evening or Tuesday morning. Catch a bit of time in Santa Monica/Venice Beach before the 4.30pm flight back to LHR. Thanks to everyone who helped. We are looking forward to this trip in a very big way :D |
Good plan. Flying to PSP and starting there will work much better for what you wanted to see (deserts and Joshua Tree).
