There is a thread on Airliners.net on CX870 (HKG-SFO) from Sunday Feb 4.

It was in holding pattern off the coast waiting for traffic clearance. It was cleared to land at SFO but diverted to OAK after 2 missed approach and go-arounds. Crew timed out at OAK so CX had to send a new crew to OAK which took 4 hours. Once airborne, it missed another approach at SFO and while circling over Polo Alto for another attempt, SFO closed due to wind exceeding limits so the flight diverted to LAX. PAX ended up clearing custom at LAX and went on their own for the night (weather related!) Based on flight aware and flightradar24 tracking, the plane is still at LAX as of Monday afternoon.

Sounds like hell for everyone involved.

That sounds horrible. Customs couldn't just process everybody at OAK and stick them on BART?

I guess we are going off topic a bit but I think OAK immigration and customs is not staffed 24/7. Plus CX would have to rebook any onward connection from an airport where it has no staff. Logistically, it's not that simple. It can be done but first, the airport has to agree to deplane and we don't know if CX tried to do that or not.

BTW, CX870 LAX-SFO is scheduled to depart LAX at 7:30 pm and arrive at SFO 8:30 pm local time on Feb 5... roughly 35 hours after the initial scheduled arrival time at SFO. I am curious how many passengers will show up at check in for this final leg.

But hey, these lucky people got to experience reverse flow landing AND takeoff at LAX!

Not if anyone is flying out of LAX since about 3:45 pm today. They went back to West flow.

Meanwhile, 6L/24R closure has been extended to 6 pm Feb 20. If East, hourly arrival rate is 48.
