787-8 Economy Row 36

My wife and I are flying round trip LAX-SCL-LAX in October and I noticed that there are two seats together at the very rear of the economy cabin. On both flights this entire row is greyed out, so is there a trick to getting seats? It'd be great if it was just the two of us together.

I called LATAM's US number and oddly enough the middle seats in row 36 were available over the phone, but the window aisle were not. I'm hopeful I can snag these at check-in, especially since they don't look great on the seat map.

Sometimes those seats are used by the crew.

And also, there are probably the worst seats in the plane.... stretched due to the curvature of the plane, next to a galley and the bathrooms....

My understanding is that there is no 36B or 36K, meaning 36AC and 36JL are just two seats together. This is nice for a couple and I think the missing middle seat makes up for the curvature of the fuselage. The 788 doesn't have bathrooms in the rear galley, but I agree galley noise could be annoying. Overall, I would prefer these to being a couple in a window/middle and having to ask someone every time I want to get up during the flight.

MOST (if not all) of the times they are assigned as crew rest. crew usually sets up a sort of tent there for privacy.
They won't be available for you to pick.

Unfortunate for us, but makes sense. You'd think with the crew rest options on the 787 they would want to sell those seats to revenue passengers, although perhaps LATAM didn't order them with a large enough crew rest area.
