Tropicana Ave - Pedestrian Friendly?
 

I will be staying at The Luxor soon and I may want to check out a couple of businesses/restaurants an Tropicana Avenue fairly near The Orleans. I am a fast walker and I generally walk from south strip hotels like The Luxor to The Mirage. The distance doesn't trouble me, but I am wondering if Tropicana Avenue from the Strip to The Orleans is pedestrian friendly. I notice that the Interstate intersects and I am unsure if there are sidewalks designed for foot travel. I will take a cab if I need to. Thanks for any thoughts from anyone who has walked from The Orleans to Las Vegas Blvd. South (or vice-versa).

Funny enough you'll find an entire discussion of this in this forum on the In-N-Out Burger thread: as it relates to walking to the In-N-Out Burger on Industrial from NYNY.....the same route as you inquire about vis a vis walking to the Orleans.

There is no pedestrian friendly way to walk it, though others have hoofed it across the "pedestrian unfriendly' route, which involves running across active exit and entrance ramps of the freeway. Mrs. kaukau and I attempted to walk it, but turned back, discretion being the better part of valor, for us. We took a cab for our In-N-Out fix. So I recommend a cab. It's cheaper than playing in traffic!

I don't trust any of the drivers in Las Vegas to the point where if I walk from Venetian to Wynn I will walk on the Treasure Island side since there is a barrier between Las Vegas Blvd traffic and the sidewalk. There was none on the Palazzo side (during construction).

I am budgeting $20 - $30 for cabs now instead of the walk.

I love the West, but almost all of my bad pedestrian experiences occur in large cities in the western U.S.

I guess they think everyone should have a car.

Tropicana between the 15 and the Orleans is known for it's streetwalking escorts (FWIW).

For the exception of I-15 (crossing)? That is pretty much your
"hairy spot" as far as walking on west Trop. I live off of Rainbow &
Trop. When i go running,sometimes i go east to 15 and then back home.
Walking to Orleans if thats your intention is easy after I-15.
Just like walking in any populated areas. As long as you`re alert, you
are good to go.

There may also be free shuttles to/from Orleans and hotels near Luxor - ask the concierge at Luxor and they might know.

It is about as far from the Luxor to the Orleans as to the Mirage. You could shave a few steps by taking the tram to the Excalibur first. Two other points: 1) What is your time worth? 2) It's January as this is being written, but to attempt the trek in 100-degree summertime weather would be folly.

I have been known to make myself walk long distances (say from the MGM to LAS, with my luggage) as a reminder to myself to not lose.

Rental cars run $20 a day or less and parking is abundant and free. Why not just hire a car for a a day to sightsee?

Pedestrian friendly? Sure as friendly as any major avenue in a big city.

Crime friendly? Not so much. I wouldn't advise walking that route at night.

Well, not exactly, as the route OP inquired about entails attempting to cross two active exit/entrance ramps of a freeway, with no pedestrian accomodation. :eek:
