Latest on Golden Nugget?

Anybody know how the GN is doing, since Landry's now seems to be in financial trouble. Have services taken a hit there? We are booked there for next month and are wondering if we should change.

Cheers,

M8

you might want to refer to this trip report.

Lots of detail and some recent pics of the GN rooms.

I know a lot of people who prefer MSS downtown, but that is probably more of a YMMV issue. Though, I think from a comp perspective, the folks at MSS will show you more love, once again, YMMV.

paging kaukau............

Good morning, baccarat_king!

Martinis at 8: I don't think you should re-book, if you're happy with your rates. Since the renovations - new pool, restaurant re-vamping, slight floor and entrance alterations - the Nugget really is the class of downtown: the best bars with good glassware, the busiest and cleanest pit and slots, nicest rooms. Don't worry about Landry's: the Nugget has lots of employees who have been there over 20 years and are good at taking care of guests. If you can get an employee - bartender, dealer, cocktail waitress, pit boss - to introduce you personally to a host with a recommendation - "This is my friend: take good care of him!" - you'll be ahead of others who just rely on the 24 karat Club and Casino Marketing for their comps. But the Nugget is not expensive, anyway, for the quality environment they provide: $69 a night weekdays, with a "stay 2 nights, get the third night free" promotion available to the general public on many dates; how reasonable is that?

As baccarat_king mentioned, MSS is generally easier to get comps from than the GN: any pit-boss can comp your rooms, or give you a discount, or book you next trip as a comp! They don't have hosts at MSS; the suits handle those duties.

Mrs. kaukau and I are going to Vegas for our monthly visit next week, Aug 26th - 30th; and staying downtown as usual. We'll be staying at the Plaza - comped rooms for a $100,000 bingo tournament - and we'll be drinking and gambling at the Nugget, where we have several bartenders and suits that we've become friendly with over the years, and always visit. I'll be sure to inquire along the general lines of your concerns, as expressed in your post, and give you an update "from the horse's mouth"; and if you have any other questions, just post here.

Oh yeah, one more thing: the Las Vegas contingent of FlyerTalkers is the most friendly and fun-loving bunch one would ever want to meet - and they are always up for some fun! So if you get a chance to arrange to meet them, I know you'll make some new friends!

TTYL,

k.

Thanks guys. As you may recall from my past posts, Ms. M8 and I usually visit Vegas once or twice a year, staying at the various properties on/off Strip. GN has been high on our list due to the renovations. We do think Fertita made a wise choice in buying the GN and fixing it up, but these other business practices of his are now questionable. We are there this year 27 Sep - 1 Oct. We will keep the booking, but are still sleuthing for more info on GN. The rates are good, we selected one of the high-end rooms.

Cheers,

M8

Aloha, M8!

We'll arrive late Sunday night Sep 30 at 11:30 pm for Mrs. kaukau's birthday trip.

Perhaps we can meet for martini's at midnight or 1:00am Monday Oct 1, at the GN's International Beer Bar with our bartender Mike, or at the GN's Claude's Bar, by the blackjack and craps tables, with our bartender Jim? ;)

I would love to finally meet you, kaukau ,while you are here in Las Vegas (your second home?) but it is depressing to think that, as a local, 1:00 AM on a Monday (school night) is SOOOO out of my realm. We locals are lucky to stay awake to hear the first Jay Leno joke during the week, let alone flitz downtown at that hour on a weekday! Party hearty for me!

And regarding the Golden Nugget - still the best place, downtown, to stay and don't see any reason to change reservations...but I will keep an eye out (early in the evening news reports) and let you know if that should change.

DMark,

It's Monday morning in America. Everyone calls in sick. C'mon, you can do it too :D

P.S. Is your blog still up? ^

Ditto for Mrs. k. and myself, DMark. We usually have dinner with Mrp Alert, Sunnyhere, DebUA1k and other fun-loving Vegan FTers at a more reasonable hour at least once a trip. Please join us! And since we're booked once a month for the next year - http://flyertalk.com/forum/showpost....72&postcount=2 - the Magic 8-Ball says: "Outlook looks favorable." ;)

Looking forward to it.

Happy Birthday!, Mrp Alert!!!! We'll celebrate 3 times: next week in Vegas; next weekend on Maui at the Lahaina DO; and back in Vegas Oct 1-4. That last one will be a triple birthday celebration: Mrp Alert, Mrs. Martinis at 8, and Mrs. kaukau!

So... how 'bout drinks on 09/08 or 09/09 :D

Back to topic,
Some recent comments from the incredibly knowledgeable and fine folks over on the LVA boards, blended opinions... seems quite YMMV, though, they are all recent comments.

No good VP left, except for $5 JOB

The buffet is okay, the cafe is decent, but service sucks. Vic & Anthony's was inedible when we tried it, Grotto is okay, but too expensive for what it is and there is much better Italian available cheaper elsewhere (Nora's).

The pool looks great, shark tank is cool. Not being a pool user I couldn't tell you what it's like hanging out in/by the pool.

The regular rooms are okay, the suites are nice, the spa suites are great.

GN food Vic and Anthony's good to above average---buffet upstairs very well lit food sub par and that even includes breakfast---cocktail service above average---Noodle House just a bunch of vegetables and a tad dirty. Really like Grotto's food very good. Pool very nice and a good idea for looks not very practical to enjoy. Poker room very busy and real nice.

Suites are very nice. I for one thought the food at Vic and Anthony's was excellent. Food at the coffee shop was OK as was the buffet. High limit area is nice, but small. Decent BJ rules in the high limit. Pool was great. My wife loves the spa. One thing that people forget to mention about the Nugget is the convenience. You're not walking miles to your room or to go and eat. Valets is reasonably quick and add to that the fact that any number of casinos is steps away and not a cab ride to get there. For higher play table action, it is comparable with the strip.

Greetings from Cabinda, Angola. Here broadband is scarce. I'm back stateside in a little less than two weeks.

Off topic: I'm also looking for a good quality, white tablecloth, stand-alone restaurant. Any recommedations other than stuff like Ruth Chris, Morton's, etc.

Thanks in advance,

M8

This turned out to be a great visit. The GN is pretty nice. No, it's not Wynn, but it is pretty nice. We dined at Vic & Anthony's Steakhouse and it was great. Very good wait-staff also. Harold was our waiter and was very knowledgeable and courteous.

We met kaukau and Mrs. kaukau. These are two great people ^ kaukau really has his strategy down for points, miles, comps, and living the good life. We can all learn from him.

Cheers,

M8
