Sleeping advice for LAS
 

I had the unfortunate experience of missing my connection on UA/Ted to a US redeye on Friday night. I could not find any UA people to assist me, and even when I got one on the phone, they told me to stick it (even though in SFO, they had told the LAS people in my PNR to put me up on a misconnect).

Nonetheless, the US gate people were SUPERB! They tried to get me a cheap room, but it was a Friday night, all everything was booked. So, they showed me a great place to crash at LAS. In Concourse D, there is a place at the front of the terminal called the Kids Play Place. It's a simple room with some things for little kids to crawl on. However, it's carpeted, clean, dimly lit and comfortable. It was quiet except for the music in the background (a decent 70's and 80's light rock mix that was refreshing for me). There was no noise of equipment or slot machines. There were also some benches that I leaned up against as a backrest.

This was definately better than sitting on the hard seats in the brightly lit concourse. For anyone doing a MR to LAS on any of the airlines in Concourse D (US, UA, Delta, Airtran, AA, F8... I probably left one out, forgive me) this is nice. Plus you get the added bonus of dropping a few quarters in a slot machine without having to leave the airport (or even security), should that interest you.

Sleeping at LAS?
 

Doing a MR over the 4th of July, and have a layover from 12:30A to 6A on the morning of the 5th. I can grab an inexpensive night at the Fairfield Inn LAS, but other than a shower (and the next leg is my homeward leg), not sure it's worth it for that short a time frame.

SleepingInAirports.com only lists information from a few years ago on LAS, but doesn't sound very favorable. Looking for more recent input. Any place to curl up (more specifically stretch out after 24 hours of flying) for a few?

Factors to consider: flying CO/UA, single woman. I have good "commuter" instincts as to my surroundings, and of course not oversleeping. Mostly just looking for a quietish place to sit where I can be comfy for a few hours.

What do you all think?

I think you should get a hotel room. Sleeping in airports, train stations and bus stations is for the homeless.

Take a shower... Catch 4 hours sleep, get up, have some coffe and go to your flight refreshed.

Play the slots in the terminal or go to the MGM Grand for other gaming options. You've got a good 3 hours to play ;)

Are 1230AM and 600AM your flight arrival and departure times? If so you'd barely have any time to sleep, since you probably wouldn't reach the hotel till 1:00AM, and would probably have to plan to be back at LAS by 4:30 AM to get through security, etc.

I'd suggest either grabbing a cab to the south strip area (MGM, NYNY, etc.) for a couple hours, stroll around, eat, etc., or just sit at the airport. If you choose to leave the airport, there are self-service lockers near the UA gate area where you can leave your stuff. They require a PIN code and fingerprint scan to deposit and retrieve your items.

If you stay at the airport, the UA gate area is probably a reasonable place to hang out, the seating is not uncomfortable, big windows, and they have two large counter areas with stools and power outlets for laptops. And of course, LAS has free wi-fi terminal-wide. Plus some slot machines if you're so inclined. Food options at those hours might be limited to nonexistent, though. I'm assuming there will be folks milling about during those hours, so safety shouldn't be an issue (i.e., I don't think the place will be deserted).

LAS is actually the only airport I've ever slept at. I took a VDB out of there once in the middle of Spring Break and on a fight night so there were no hotels to be had. It wasn't terrible, I found a bench of seats without armrests, put a shirt under my head, an arm over my eyes and slept a few hours. I'd do it again if I was in your circumstances, it's not awful or "for the homeless" as mlassoff said.

Sleep in the LAS airport? With all the gaming machines there?!?!?!

Yes, unfortunately those are my arrival and departure times (give or take a few). Thank you for the info about the left luggage area. That is quite helpful.

Good to know. The SleepingInAirports site indicated there weren't benches without arms, so perfect.

Not a gambler. Grew up literally in high roller territory (dad ran junkets and ran with the big boys) and I was taught by casino managers and pit bosses. I can make whatever "play" money I have last or increase with way above average regularity, but choose not to because of what I've seen over time. Just not my thing. Occasionally a slot machine will call my name for a pull or two, win and leave, but that's it. Have extraordinary luck in my life and prefer to use it on other things :)

But I do get what you're saying about the machines, hence why I asked about somewhere quiet.

I'd take a REALLY cheap room -just for the shower-by the time you've eaten and showered it'll be time to go back to the airport anyway but you'll at least feel refreshed. I've paid something silly like sub $20 for Imperial Palace in the past -had no intention of using the sub-standard bed just wanted a base for a few hours and it fitted the bill.

I don't think sleeping at the airport would be "awful" just a bit random -all you need is a few drunks doing what you are doing to make it an annoying and sleep free experience-assuming you can find seating without arms away from the banks of slots.

It was the noise factor I was thinking about--the only times I'll bet are when there's some promotion that puts the odds in my favor. The act itself holds no appeal to me whatsoever.

I don't think there's any part of the airport free of the machines except the international arrivals area of terminal 2.

I see people sleeping in the (landside, near D) waiting area near the exit to parking on the esplanade level all the time. There are chairs near video monitors. No slots in the area but there is noise from the elevators.

I've had success sleeping near the Allegiant gates in D. Because of G4's schedules, they're very lightly used.

I got stuck in Terminal D a few years back when I misconnected on a redeye. In the main atrium of terminal D, there was a children's play area that the airline employees told me about. It was quieter than the rest of the terminal and had a carpeted floor. Turned out quite comfortable. There were clean restrooms close by it. If you're in terminal D, I would check this out.

That sounds perfect! Will check this out, along with the area near Allegiant. Between the free wi-fi and a quieter area, have a feeling I'll skip the hotel.
