What's the deal with most of the good strip hotels claiming to be sold out on those dates? Anyone know?

The three biggest conventions that weekend:

• National Association of Home Builders (92,000)
• National Assocation of Television Programming Executives (10,000)
• Parker Seminar (8,500)

The first one starts on 1/19, so you might have better luck booking 1/15-1/18? Then again, those people might be flying in during that weekend.

I'm hoping that rooms will open up as the date draws closer. It is sort of in between CES and the Home Builders and I'm betting they hope that people extend into the weekend. As a hedge, I booked the Orleans for $68 via Orbitz. Mandelay Bay still has rooms $220 via Travelocity.

It is also Martin Luther King weekend (with many taking Monday off). I was able to book at the newly opened Westin (off the strip, 10 min walk to Ballys) for $119/night
