Hotel recommendation requested
 

Here's is the scenario...

Six old college buddies are looking for accomodations between November 6-9. We're looking for something on the cheap side so we have more money for the tables and finer restaurants. Our target rate is about $100/room/night.

It seems like the maximum you are allowed in a room is 4. How strict is that? If we can find a large enough hotel room, we'd have no problems cramming into one room.

We are looking for a hotel either on the Strip or within walking distance of it.

And what the heck is going on that weekend? It's difficult to find some reasonable hotel rates on the Strip.

If there's a big convention like comdex, you may have to stay a bit off the strip. Look into places like Terrible's, Station Casinos, or Silverton, then get a cheap car rental. Also some nice Hampton's that are maybe 10-15 minutes away.

Forget the rental car advice. I'm sure you and your buddies are going to be drinking. If you really don't care about the accomodations, check out the Westward Ho. You can get a 3 bedroom suite with a living room (or a smaller room) for very cheap. It's located next to Stardust (good sports book and Tony Romas for ribs) on the North end of the strip. You can walk to a lot of places from there.
Check out the Flamingo and Imperial Palace for cheap rates as well. These are centrally located, otherwise you'll be spending the room-rate savings on taxis.
As for the 4 ppl/room rule, Vegas is like most places. If you give them a reason to enforce it then they will.
If you have 6 guys in a room, it will probably be a mess; it would be nice if you would tip the maids.

We do have one friend that will be driving from LAX, so we do have some free transportation if we need to go outside of the Strip. But I'm 100% against driving drunk, so something as close to the Strip is preferred. I've been using Travelaxe, and the Westward Ho has really cheap rates. I then priced out their 3-bedroom apartment, and I got three nights for just under $480!

You never know. I was there earlier this year and it was crawling with women there for a rubber stamp convention. All very pleasant people, and I never saw so many Longaberger Baskets in my life (a cult, no doubt). That might have been the same trip that Don King's people were in the Payless car rental lining up luxury SUV's for somebody.

And if you haven't been before, cabs are everywhere. Just jump in one to run down the strip or wherever. It can add up if you want to run between Fremont and the Strip, but just along the Strip it's a few bucks each time. Plus there's the fun of just walking down the strip and stopping at many different places.

I really like the chips at the Stardust. Anyone know where I can order some like that? (Clay composite with a metal disc in the center with the Stardust logo on it.)

The best part about staying at the Westward Ho is the fact that saying "ho" all the time provides non stop laffs.

Here's my debacle now...

Last night, I fired up my browser, and was able to price out the 3-bedroom "apartment" for $483 for three nights. I also called their Reservations phone number. She said that all of their apartments are booked for the weekend! I confirmed to her that I just got the Reservations page for an apartment for those nights, and I could enter my credit card information. She said to go ahead and try, but I should be receiving an e-mail saying there is no availability.

So I did...

This morning, I receive an e-mail CONFIRMING my reservation! I call them back. They first got my first name and last name reversed, so I had to give my reservation number. Then she said I'm confirmed for a 3-bedroom apartment for Nov 6-9.

Question is: who do I trust? If we get to Vegas and they said they have no apartments, could I ask for 3 regular rooms for the price we paid, instead? Of course, I guess the answer is "depends on how much you complain", right?

I'd trust the reservation you have in hand, but I would get to the motel as early as possible. If they're going to bump someone, it will likely be the last person to show up.
