Avoiding Comdex?!

I was planning to visit Las Vegas Nov 21-24 and just found out, via vegasfreedom.com, that Comdex, the Mother of All Conventions with 150,000 attendees, will be in town Nov. 18-22.

Should I reschedule? Even though Comdex ends Nov. 22, will many attendees stay for the Nov. 22-24 weekend, so that the whole town will be a madhouse and room rates will be exorbitant?

Thanks for any advice you may have.

I was there during Comdex last year and Vegas did not seem much busier than a normal busy weekend. You make find the rates at the Las Vegas Hilton higher since Comdex is being held at the Convention center which adjoins the Hilton, which is the host hotel. Also if you have a favourite restaurant you might want to make sure and have reservations.
I rather suspect the following weekend Thanksgiving will have more visitors in Vegas.

Incidentally even if you are not a computer geek go vist Comdex entrance is free and you will be amazed at some of the stuff you see.

I suggest you do some research (LA Times, Quikbook, Expedia, Cheapovegas.com, Hotels.com, and individual websites) and book now. Keep an eye on things closer to your date to make sure your rate is still the lowest. Have a good time!

If you'd like any advice please post more info about what kind of experience and price range you're after.

Restaurants will be packed, cabs impossible to get, shows sold out, but the casinos will be empty.

There's a joke about comdex: The average Comdexer brings one shirt and a $20 to Vegas and doesn't change either all week.

Pick another weekend.

I would agree. Unless you have a huge desire to see Comdex--and it could be very interesting--I'd choose a different weekend.

I was only going to bring $10...better hit the ATM before leaving the airport...I'll be at comdex that week and will be extending to the 24th...I think a lot of people will start leaving the city on thursday night since not too much is happening on Friday at COMDEX...a guy I am traveling with is staying at the Riviera and I want to stay elsewhere...gotta get the extra $60 a night past some folks I guess...I know it sounds like pennies, but his room is only $85 at the comdex rate and the paris(a personal favorite is $149 which is still good)...we'll see I guess...now where did I put that shirt I was going to wear...

Glad to hear many Comdex folks will be leaving town that Thursday night, when I'll be arriving.

I've started doing some research on hotels and so far have reserved Bally's (average of $110/night for the 3-night period). Really have my heart set on Venetian, if not to splurge for one night, but I've only found rates that are way above $200. Perhaps better rates come out closer to the actual dates...

From what I have been hearing about ALL conventions is that attendance is down approximately 40%. The convention centers and the participants have been really hurting.

I don't think it will be as big as it usually is.

I booked a ticket arriving Vegas Thursday night at 10:30pm on November 21, and leaving on Monday on the redeye without even realizing that it was Comdex week.

I've found hotel rates to be very reasonable; I was able to secure a comped room at Tropicana (even though I spent like $5 there), use my rewards points at the Residence Inn, and get another cheap room <$20 for Sunday night.

For me Comdex is a bonus that I can hit it on Friday...

How did you manage that? I'm trying to plan a trip 11/8-11/11 and would appreciate any advice.

I think you'll be ok. COMDEX is not the show it used to be. I suspect the majority of folks will be gone by Thursday. You should be able to find a free ticket for the event somewhere. It's worth checking out.

pitflyer Oct 21, 2002 6:46 pm

www.comdex.com to order a free ticket.

I like a challenge. If your interested, I just ran your dates through several web sites including Quikbook ( http://www.quikbook.com ). It now shows a rate of $54 for Thurs and $107 for Fri & Sat (prob not including 9% room tax) for a "standard" room, whatever that is. It nevers hurts to double check room rates, especially in Las Vegas. If price is an issue and your not picky about room decor, check this out.

Be sure and read all of the fine print on Quikbook. They may require prepayment to get this rate. Quikbook also uses the Venitian, but it shows no rooms available on the dates you specified.

My personal preference in LAS is the MGM Grand. Sadly, you can't book rooms there through Quikbook.
