Hotels outside LAS

Has anyone stayed in hotels in nearby towns, like Primm or Jean? For the non-gambler, are these reasonable alternatives to the higher priced LAS hotels ($30 vs $60)?

Haven't stayed in Primm or Jean, but the hotels in Laughlin (93 miles away, as the crow flies--1 1/2 hours by car), usually have much lower rates than in LAS). There is a Golden Nugget, a Flamingo, and about eight or ten others there. Located on the banks of the Colorado river, there's plenty to see and do if you're not into the Vegas scene. Check out the Laughlin website for more info if you're interested.

Try Terribles at Flamingo/Paradise. Green Valley Ranch just opened up, at 215 and Green Valley Parkway. Marriott just took over hotel management of the Regent in Summerlin...

We have stayed in Laughlin. It is nice there, a more laid back version of Vegas. It is 100 miles from LAS, whereas Primm/Jean is 20 miles away, certainly more accessible. I ajust wonder if Primm/Jean is anything like Laughlin.

UA, I will check out Terribles. Thanks for the tip.

I'm confused as whether you are considering those locations because you want a different atmosphere or because it will be cheaper. There are some very cheap rooms in Vegas at decent hotels. If money is the issue, you should consider the Stardust, the Orleans, Westward Ho or even the Hilton. Price is based on Hotel, Time of year, weekend or weekdays. Weekdays are always cheaper and dead center summer and winter are cheaper as well. Additionally, downtown is always cheaper than the strip. Good luck.

Primm

Primm is more like 40 miles, not 20. Jean is closer to Vegas, but pretty sad looking, compared to Primm.

Primm does have a good outlet mall. Some unusual stores there also. They have the only Tommy Bahama corporate outlet store I've ever come across.

Smile Maybe Northwest Las Vegas?

If you want to get away from the Hubub and just relax by the pool, you could try the J.W. Marriott in Northwest Las Vegas. I hear it is really secluded and plush and far away from everything. We're going the first week of June and are going to try to bid on Priceline for Resort in the Northwest Las Vegas area. The J.W. has come in around $74 to $85 before. We're hoping to stay there 3 or 4 days. My daughter's never stayed with us at a really nice Resort where they pamper you, before. She'll love it.

Don't forget priceline. Great deals on hotel rooms if you're willing to stay off the strip.

I am a very frequent visitor to Las Vegas. I am simply looking for a different experience.

I will definitely try the JW Marriott sometime. I haven't stayed there before nor have I been to the Summerlin area. I have been out to Lake Las Vegas, though. My visits to the Hyatt Regency Lake Las Vegas were enjoyable. I haven't been to The Ritz-Carlton there, so I may try that as well.

That being said, I realize the higher-end resort experiences are much different than those of Primm. Has anyone been in the casinos? How are they? Are the hotels OK? Perhaps I'll just have to give it a try and find out.

Definitely give the Ritz-Carlton at Lake Las Vegas a try. I booked a weekend there for my fifth anniversary last September and my husband and I loved it. We stayed in a club level room, with a great view of MonteLago Village.

Is it the casinos in Primm you're wondering about? I've been there with friends/family who have gambled (I'm a loser, so I pretty much refrain from throwing away my money ). My father-in-law enjoyed the craps table there and one of my friends did ok on the slots. These casinos have more of a 'locals' feel, rather than a 'Strip' feel - kind of like the locals' casinos on the outskirts of the Strip. Not glitzy, more homey.

The best thing about Primm, to me, is the outlet mall. At least at the mall I know I'm going to get something for my money.

OK, I've decided to try the JW Marriott. I'll be there the weekend of the 22nd (May).

Budget Gambler

Ok, I stop and play at Primm now and then. I have never stayed in the hotels, but of the three (Buffalo Bills, Whiskey Pete's and the Primm Valley Resort) the Resort is the most upscale. I think Bills is the largest. The casino at Bills is pretty large and lots of slots and tables. You can expect Downtown Vegas prices and rules. I go to Primm for the outlet mall and to ride the coaster. There is a great Williams-Somoma/Pottery Barn outlet right by the Tommy Bahama store. The Desperado Coaster is insanely fast and fun.

I've stayed and played at the Gold Strike many times. It's a good alternative when I can't find a room in Vegas - I can score a $39 weekend rate more often than not. I'm rated there and find it easy to score a meal comp when I ask for it. The coffee shop is pretty good. Just too many smokers. The rooms are very large and quiet. One funny thing is that the bathrooms don't have tubs; they are all ADA showers. And, there is a shampoo dispenser (like hand soap). The casino has mostly slots but there are a few tables. Again, Downtown Vegas prices. Across the I-5 is Nevada Landing, which is a bit smaller than the Gold Strike. The rooms are just as nice. The casino is very slow. The pit boss I talked to said over 2/3 of the action in Jean is at the Gold Strike which are people driving into Vegas from SoCal. For some reason, no one feels like haging a left and playing at Nevada Landing.

One thing - the section of I-5 from Primm to about 10 miles north of Jean (on the was into Vegas) is a notorious speed trap zone.

I also play a lot at the Rampart, which is the casino at the JW Marriott in Summerlin. It's a very nice, clean, and modern casino with Downtown table limits. I was warned by a friend of mine to avoid the Suncoast casino down the road - he felt the house edge there was a bit higher than expected.

Hope this helps!
