Wifi speeds?

I'm making a switch from QR to KE for an upcoming long haul trip, does anyone have feedback on the wifi speeds on KE? I've searched both this forum and the internet and can't seem to find reviews/feedback.

I didn't think KE had any WiFi on their planes (or at least most of them). I thought they were GOING to add WiFi but it wouldn't be started until like 2025 or something. I know there's no WiFi on the 747 or 777-300 to ICN from the US (or vice versa).

No, they added in 2023, you can look that up, or check KE website. What I read was the reason they were hesitant to add was due to Koreans used to really fast speeds so they would not be happy with the speeds in the air.

Anyone?

Nope - flew KE in December, none of the planes on the route had wifi (a380, 747-8i, 777) and no indication it was coming any time soon.

According to their website, Wi-Fi is only available on their new Boeing 737-8 and Airbus A321-neo aircraft. However, I’m uncertain about Korean Air’s routes for these planes. None of the U.S. routes I’ve flown recently (between 2021 and 2023) have used these specific aircraft types.

Interesting. I was reading a few different blogs about wifi including this one from May 2023. https://onemileatatime.com/news/korean-air-wi-fi/

ZERO wifi on long haul routes. And they have SO FEW 737-8 and A-321 Neo that you won't really find them on any flights easily. In fact, these are the WORST planes because you can always take a massive twin aisle plane within Asia.....the last thing I want tis to be on a tiny 737-8 lol (like I am this week flying to Osaka, when in the past they used to fly 747s!)

I flew A333, 747-8, 777, 787 recently over the past few months- ZERO WIFI.

A year later, and this is no longer true. Their website says that, as of January 2025, wifi is available on "B737-8, B787-10, A321neo, and A350-900 aircraft." This includes such routes as ICN-YVR (operated by a 787-10).

Additionally, it seems like some of their 77Ws now have wifi as well (though this is not mentioned anywhere on Korean's website), so you may get lucky on other long-haul routes. I flew a 77W recently on a Korean TPAC flight and purchased wifi from Panasonic ($21 for the full flight). Speed test showed ~21 Mbps down, ~2 Mbps up. The wifi was a lot faster and more reliable than the Panasonic wifi I've tried on other carriers (eg, TPAC flights on United and JAL).

I was on a 737-800 flight a few months ago, from HND to ICN, and it had Wi-Fi. However, given the flight departure was 2:00AM, I didn't use it and instead went straight to sleep.

I just flew KE74 YYZ-ICN (HL8006 B77W) and received email and text at ~T-20h:

  • On KE 074 on 15APR, you can use Korean Air Wi-Fi after purchase. Stay connected so you don't miss out.
  • Service may be unavailable due to unforeseen circumstances, such as a change of aircraft prior to departure or interference with satellite reception.

with a further link to a connection guide etc. I didn't try to do anything heavy duty with it, but it was more than adequate for email and basic web surfing.

I flew ICN-DPS and return end of January 2025 / early Feb 2025 - we had a 777-300 ER (that was also used on the London route for both of our segments) with the new seats (old biz suite, but in black) and new economy seats WITH WIFI. I was SHOCKED like I gasped haha the flight attendants and I had a good kiki about it.

So, wifi is appearing on the 777s slowly but surely without any announcement!

I flew ICN-HKG and back like two weeks ago - 747 with the new seat covers (still old suite seat when I passed by) - but no wifi.
