New Entry Requirements for US Citizens to South Korea

I know TPG (Link) has a step by step process and article but the MOFA/Embassy Website released public statement (Link).

Just another way to making non-Koreans harder to enter the country. Flying in November and have to schedule appointments to get all my documentation reviewed but another hurdle....

Many countries are doing this, even the U.S. is doing this. So I don't see a problem.

Stumbled on this elsewhere:

Message for U.S. Citizens: Korea Electronic Travel Authorization Required as of September 1

Most U.S. passport holders traveling to Korea for tourism or business purposes for less than 90 days can obtain a K-ETA. Apply at the K-ETA website for 10,000 KRW: https://www.k-eta.go.kr/portal/apply/index.do. The fee is non-refundable even if the application is denied. Travelers must apply for the K-ETA at least 24 hours prior to boarding a flight or ship bound for Korea. Note: the application fee is waived during the K-ETA pilot period from May 3 to August 31, 2021.

Visas are required for all other purposes, including employment, teaching English, and for stays longer than 90 days.

Please consult our COVID-19 website for other pandemic-related entry requirements, including the need to show results from a negative PCR test issued within 72 hours of departure and a mandatory 14-day quarantine in a government facility at the traveler’s expense for most short-term visitors: https://kr.usembassy.gov/022420-covid-19-information/.

A family member has a flight booked into ICN in early 2022, and neither carrier (KE and OZ) advised of the necessity for this, so far as I am aware. Maybe they wait until the departure is closer to advise in re: the requirements-du-jour?

Who cares? You have no approved K-ETA, you don't get to board. It is that simple.

Can’t see how the carrier benefits from not advising pax of new requirements, particularly in difficult times like these. For folks who have flown into Korea many times over the past thirty years or so with nothing more than their US passport, how many would arrive at the gate ignorant of this newish requirement?

"The ETA system will be completed by April 2021 followed by its pilot launch test and supplementation period between May to August 2021 and will be fully implemented in September 2021." this is probably why - since they expect this to be fully implemented in Sept 2021, I'm pretty sure they will send out e-mails/notification once its fully implemented.
