Upgrade a repatriation flight?

We are traveling from LAX to BKK through ICN on a repatriation flight on Korean Air in August. The flight is “organized” by the Thai Embassy in Washington DC. We are told to book tickets through this travel agengy:
https://www.ihanatour.com/thai/index

Does anyone have any ideas on how I could upgrade our economy class tickets to business? I have 800k points on Chase Ultimate rewards, 700k miles on American Airlines, and 500k miles on United airlines. Thanks.

Your AA and UA miles won't help at all as KE is a member of SkyTeam (DL).

Beyond this, can you see a fare class on. your ticket? I suspect that it might be an unpublished fare, so I'd start there as well as reading the T&C for KE. I don't know whether Chase points can be transferred to KE or one of its close partners.

Must you take a repatriation flight versus just booking a ticket on a regularly scheduled carrier from the USA to BKK?

The travel agengy won’t actually issue the tickets until a few days before the flight, but I will ask what the fare class will be.

Yes, we must buy tickets through this company and buy tickets on flights that are organized through the Thai embassy. Entry into Thailand right now is very very difficult and there are no commercial flights. Thanks.

I mean I literally LOLd because like that's not really a thing. This isn't a normal flight by any means. If anything at all - you HAVE to go through Hana Tour. Korean Air cannot help you because they aren't selling the ticket to you. Also if you look - that flight has a TONNNN of rules, like even economy doesn't get a seat assignment in advance. Only Hana tour can help you.

You can ask HANA if it's possible to purchase a Business Ticket vs Economy one but there will most likely not be any upgrade option. Especially with the currencies you have available. Except you could use your Ultimate Rewards to offset the cost of the ticket against a cash deposit.

From LAX they use Asiana which would work with Star Alliance miles. Are you being repatriated as a Thai citizen or a foreigner on special permit?

My wife and kids are dual USA/Thai passport holders. I only have USA citizenship but have the equivalent of a “spouse visa” for Thailand so I can join the flight.

If the OP wooed check with Hana Tour's website, he'd learn:

12) Purchase tickets using miles - No mileage redemption is allowed on this program. Thank you.

Pay for upgrade on repatriation flight?

Hi,

I can't see a way to upgrade a repatriation flight to business class (to Thailand) via the web on the ihanatour.com site (for Korean airlines). Does anyone know how to do this? I'd like to avoid calling them if I can, assuming I'll be put on hold for a few hours.

Thanks!

They don't "Upgrade" in that sense. You would have to cancel your economy ticket entirely and book a new one in business. Korean Air never does "paid upgrade" like Delta etc.
