Hi Guys!

SkyPass newbie here.

I have been digging on the Korean Air USA website. I am still not clear on a few things:

1. The prices (in miles) quoted on KoreanAir.com for Korea - USA (and v.v.) are round trip?
2. It appears there are no change fees for award bookings?

I too am accumulating Chase UR points with the thought of going KE F on the 388 JFK-ICN (connecting to SE Asia) one way and *A back one way.

Also interested in any trip reports/thoughts on KE F versus KE C on the 388.

I have never flown the 380 and figure KE F would be a great way to experience it!

Thanks,

Foo

Edit: I found on korean air's site where it says 50% mileage for one ways:

One-way bonus ticket requires 50% of round-trip mileage redemption.

I am also trying to figure out what the fuel surcharges will be for KE.

I pulled this on a random one-way F fare from JFK-BKK on KE metal. It includes the 380 from JFK - ICN and 777 ICN-BKK.

In this case the fuel charge is $201.80?

Should I expect the same charge or more on an award ticket?

Provide this information to a travel agent to help them match the fares found.
Make sure to provide the exact booking and fare codes shown.
Fare 1: Carrier KE ROW NYC to BKK (rules)

Passenger type ADT, ONE-WAY-ONLY fare, booking code R, P

Covers JFK-ICN (First), ICN-BKK (First)
$10,689.00
(YR) $200.00
(YQ) $1.80

Rep. of Korea Intl. PSC, Dep. Tax and Contribution to Intl. Poverty Eradication (BP) $8.70
US International Departure Tax (US) $16.70
US September 11th Security Fee (AY) $2.50
US Passenger Facility Charge (XF) $4.50

Subtotal per passenger $10,923.20
Number of passengers x1

Total airfare & taxes $10,923.20

I think you're on the right track with taxes/fees. KE used to use an embedded Q surcharge, but now I'm seeing just the YQ and YR with no Q surcharge in the fare breakdown that ITA reports for JFK-ICN. The Q surcharge is still being used on LON-SEL fares, however.

Thanks!

I guess the moment of truth will be when I try to book this.

I am hoping someone here has done it or at least had the miles and called KE to see what the surcharges would be.

Is it safe to assume that what others report as surcharges on a round trip award would be half for a one way?

Award availability using DL SkyMiles on ATL-ICN used to suck. ATL fliers routinely had to route through other gateways, such as IAD and ORD. Recently, possibly in relation to introduction of the nighttime ATL flight, award availability has improved tremendously. I've now got a couple of awards ex-ATL on the daytime flights KE 35/36. For those of us in the southeast, that's one of the best routes to SouthEast Asia. And award availability on intra-Asia routes has always been good, as long as you avoid blackout dates. Plus, taxes and surcharges on KE when redeeming SkyMiles are very reasonable, around $60-- as compared to $300 on MU and $500 on MH to SouthEast Asia. All things considered, leaving aside the blackout dates problem, KE's a great deal when redeeming miles, and the service (both hard and soft products) is now excellent.

Hi
We're trying to get to BKK sometime next Feb. or March for a trip to Burma and Thailand. After much teeth-knashing, I got a DL agent who was competent and she immediately found 2 economy class tickets, avoiding blackout dates, JAX-BKK, through ATL and ICN. It's on the daytime flight KE 36. We don't have enough miles for business class. The fuel surcharges are around $450 for each ticket. How is it you've paid so little? Is it because these are economy class tickets? (For clarity, I am redeeming skymiles on Korean Air).
Thanks!

Did you book this using Delta miles or Korean miles?

It would help us if you pull up your confirmation email and paste the section that looks like this:

This is per r/t ticket and there are 2 of use, so we're paying over $900 in fees for our "free" tickets. The largest amount is the fuel surcharge. When we were looking for flights to BKK on Delta metal, the taxes/fees were about $88. It was only when we called, got a competent agent who could search on Korean Air and actually found 2 economy class tickets for 80,000 sky miles each that these highs fees showed up. I assume that Delta passes this along from Korean Air. The agent assure me that there was nothing that could be done about it, which was why I was surprised to see in this thread that some have paid much less than that.

Hmmm. I wonder if the Delta agent made a mistake here. I have booked several Korean Air award tickets and never paid a fuel surchage. This includes both Economy and Business class.

I will call delta to do a dummy booking and see what the total charges come up to.

Just off the line with Delta.

I found economy on the ATL - ICN leg on Nov 14-28 of this year. She quouted me ~$380 in taxes and fees. She confirmed that the YR and YQ are being charged on award tickets.

It seems that since KE has broken this out of their fare as a separate item partners will be charging them. This is a big :td: for Delta.

For reference taxes on DL metal to ICN (via DTW) are $49.50 on an economy award ticket.

About a month ago, I booked a Prestige Class award using SkyMiles BKK-ICN-ATL-vv, and I paid around $60 or $80 in "taxes". If this has just changed, as it seems, it stinks. :td:

Yes, it truly does stink, badly. It seems we're "a day late and a dollar short" for our first trip to Thailand & Burma. We've been talking for several months about visiting Burma "some day", and less than a week ago changed the "some day" to "let's plan it and go". With only enough sky miles for 2 economy class tickets at the lowest level, delta metal had nothing for us but Korean Air did. I was glad for the availability, but can't believe we just missed flying on KE for only about $80 each. Still, though, we're terribly excited to be going! :)

These fuel surcharges are in line with what MU charges for USA-SEAsia but considerably better than what MH charges, which is more in the $500 neighborhood.

Good to know, for future reference.

Wow! I'm a Delta Silver Elite - have been based in Bangkok for ten years, but moving to Korea in about a week. Flying on Korean. Wondering whether to start accumulating the miles on Korean or just keep it with Delta. It sounds from this thread like award availability using Delta miles is okay. Stick with Delta or switch to Korean?

Of course, our flights are all booked for us through work, so I'm not sure how tricky it might be to get the travel agent to call to book Korean flights using Delta awards.

Any advice?
Thanks :)

Depends on your flight needs. You should also study the redemption and earning rules of both programs to see what fits your travel patterns best. Also read up on both forums there.

Will miles be used for personal or business travel?
Where will you be traveling too when using those miles?
Based on routes, who charges less miles? Less Fees?

You got homework to do!
