Is it possible to book or force a longer layover?

I apologize if this the wrong section to ask this question. I have a bit of a problem and the Flyertalk community seems to be the most knowledgeable regarding these things.

I plan to travel to Korea from the US in about a month. My parents made a suggestion to book a flight with a stop in Japan rather than non-stop in order to save some money. (I will be traveling Korean Air.) Interested, I thought this could be a chance to see a little bit of Japan on my way to Korea.

Unfortunately, the only connecting flight is from LAX to NRT to ICN has a 1 hour and 30 minute layover (not changing planes, I think they are just cleaning/preparing for the night flight) which will not be enough time to do anything.

Is possible to arrange or force a longer layover (ideally still under 24 hours) that would give me a chance to explore Narita without substantially increasing fees/costs?

UPDATE: I called Korean Air and asked a representative if it was possible to exit the flight at NRT and board again the following day. She said it was possible, but there would be some sort of tax involved. Not sure what this tax is and she had trouble explaining it. If anyone could clarify, that would be great. I gave them my approximate departure dates and she quoted me a new price which was around a $100 more than what it would cost without extending the layover. I'm not paying for the tickets myself, so I'll have to talk to my parents about it first, but hopefully I can make a decision before it's too late and prices get too high.

Welcome to FT:)

When you are on the flight selection screen there should be a link that says something similar to "fare rules". Clicking this will provide information about stopovers. Some fares have free stopovers, others have the option to pay extra for one.

eideline, welcome to FlyerTalk. As this is specific to Korean Air, let me move it to the dedicated forum on this airline. Ocn Vw 1K, Moderator, TravelBuzz.

BryanIAH, thank you for the suggestion.

I took a look at the fare rules and I'm not quite sure if I understand them correctly, if at all.

Information Taken from Korean Air website
Code:

Saver tickets:

Stopovers (*): Unlimited stopover permitted

Date Change: Outbound (**): Allowed. Charge 100 USD. If fare difference occur, charge fare diffrence +100 USD (certain flight restrictions apply)
Date Change: Inbound: Allowed. Free of charge within maximum stay

Rerouting: Allowed. Charge fare difference +100 USD

(*) Please contact Korean Air customer service center for information on stopover service.(for qualified fares only)
(**) Outbound date change is subject to fare difference.

If I book a flight from LAX to ICN with a single 1hour 30min stop at NRT and I want to change my flight at NRT and board a flight from NRT to ICN a day later, would that qualify as a stopover or a date change?

Perhaps I shall call Korean Air customer service this afternoon.

If you stay at NRT less than 24 hours, it is not a stopover. However, this would become a rerouting if you have purchased a ticket already. Your ticket would have to be reissued with the fee of USD100.
