Asiana vs Korean Air

I'm traveling to Korea with my family in July. We will be flying from NYC to Korea and we will be traveling with my father in law who is 85 and has some mobility issues. My wife has always used Korean Air and raves about it, but Asiana is significantly cheaper (around $270 per person, and there are 7 of us total). We could upgrade for $340 per person on Asiana and get extra legroom seats in the first few rows. Is there any reason to choose Korean Air over Asiana? My wife is hesitant because she doesn't know Asiana and is unsure of the service. I guess they also had a plane crash some years ago and maybe that is also making her hesitate. What do people think?

Asiana's service is great and catering is similar to Korean Air's. If not upgrading to economy smartium, then slight edge to Korean Air's 777 with about an inch more legroom. But economy smartium seats with 36in pitch sounds better to me if comparing to Korean Air's regular economy seats with 33in pitch.

I've always thought OZ was superior to KE - slightly better service, generally newer airframes, and a less " Air force heavy" pilot crew.
But these days I guess it is 6 of obe, half dozen of the other.

The last time I flew OZ was in late December last year and it was a flight from ICN to BKK and the service was not comparable to KE. Maybe it was just my flight.

Overall, the consensus is that Asiana food and soft service is better. Overall, their planes are older and they have older interiors and equipment swaps happen a lot. But, for a flight NYC to ICN that will be their best aircraft, usually. Otherwise, Korean Air has better planes as the interior is consistent for all long haul planes.
