Hi all....advice please..... we have 7-hour layover in Seoul on Friday afternoon (flying KIX-ICN....then ICN-LAX that night)......plan was to take train into Seoul for a few hours...... but what signs or signals should we watch for that would say "stay at the airport"?......concern would be leaving airport, but returning to an airport with much longer security checks, or some type of closure, etc....... thoughts from experienced FTers?
But if you have a trans-Pacific flight coming up, could also consider the spa at the Hyatt Regency ICN or then the Korean sauna in the basement of the terminal for a relaxing layover experience. |

We are supposed to traveling to Seoul in mid-May on the AA non-stop DFW-ICN. With all the posturing from the North, we think there are better places to spend the time and take on Seoul at a calmer time.
AA says our cancellation would be subject to the $300 penalty for each ticket. What is the criteria for the airlines to waive the penalty in cases like this? BTW we are ExPlat/Million with AA. Is anyone else travelling to ICN soon? What's your take? Thanks |

The regime in Pyongyang is not stupid: it wants to survive. Also, the Chinese, despite being irritated by North Korea, does not want NK to go away either.

As the previous poster stated, it's more or less typical NK extortion tactics being played now. At most, they might attack one of the outlying Islands or a SK naval vessel or similar.

I'm hoping that this NK issue will lower airfares to Korea significantly, just like it did when the radiation decreased traffic flow to Japan.

I am actually planning a trip the end of June to ICN (have been all year), if you find a discount I can take advantage of let me know. I will fly out of MCO with my daughter. Starting to look to buy or wait till the last minute to buy cheaper... Thoughts??

That is a good question. Not sure about US-based airlines but Korea-based airlines do not really have much of a sale for flights to Korea during the summer time. It is peak travel season and planes are usually fully booked. Having said that, I have searched Kayak.com and they have a Price Trend alert that gives advice on when to buy. For example, I put in MCO-ICN for flights during June and United gives some decent pricing, but the Kayak Price Trend says to wait with an 81% confidence that prices may fall within 7 days.
Or you can use an online site such as Expedia and they have a low price guarantee if another flight shows up cheaper within 24 hours of booking, then you get the price difference. |
