Gate Check Stroller?
My wife, infant son, and I are flying tomorrow night on KL652 from IAD-AMS. I'm attempting to determine if I can gate check our son's stroller upon boarding in Washington and then retrieve it at the door of the aircraft in Amsterdam the next morning. We would like to utilize the stroller at IAD and on our layover in AMS. Any insight into this would be most appreciated. The KL website was unclear.
Many thanks! |
This should be possible, I've seen people do this before.

You can gate check the stroller but getting it back in AMS is very hit and miss. many airlines do not offer this service because Schiphol charges them for it (or so I was told by continental). I would call KL reservations to see what the story is.

Make sure that it is tagged properly at check-in. You will need either the pinkish KL version (Gate Delivery) or the greenish AF verision (Delivery At Aircraft) - or maybe a local IAD version.
Be prepared to wait a while at AMS as they offload the other luggage first and then put the trolleys at the top of the stairs, mid way the airbridge. Only complication may be if your reference to 'layover in AMS' means that you're transfering, in which case you would need to gate-check the stroller for the connecting flight. (Hope this is not too late yet) |
Having travelled many times through AMS with our infant (who is Gold Elite, so we're talking plenty of segments), we found pushchair/stroller gate delivery to be a bit hit and miss. I would say that "most of the time", the stroller has come through.
Since we usually travelled with a "travel system" (car seat that locks into pushchair), even if the stroller didn't come we could put the infant carrier/car seat into one of those luggage trolleys. |
