Last night's KLM - EWR-AMS cancelled

Flight: 8658 was cancelled last night - does anyone know why?
I also read that the MD11 flights have problems all the time - is that true.

Also when a flight is cancelled - what happens to the pax? How do they get to AMS?
Edited to add - Could I get them to put us on A CO flight to MAD

Like anything else, having knowledge beforehand is key. If your flight experiences a cancellation, you should be able to depart on CO's EWR-MAD flight (assuming it has space, of course), but likely only if you politely insist on that option -- never expect an airline agent to suggest offline reprotection unprompted.
