Sharing FD Miles
 

Hi,

My father is going to fly from AMS to Hanoi on KLM/Malaysia in C, so that should get him about 30.000+ miles.

Anyway, since hes not a very fervent miles collector he will let me have the miles. However I'm afraid his secretary might already have put in his own FD number. Is there any way of changing the number to mine, and would KLM notice/mind?

Or if that fails, is there a way of transferring his miles to my account? I plan to use the miles in the distant future so I rather have the miles on my account instead of booking an award from his...

You will NOT earn any miles for a trip that your father takes(Unless you have the same first and last name). Its not possible to transfer miles between KLM accounts.

Your father can however book an award using his miles in your name.

Well that would confirm what I'd expect. However, I used my FD number on a ticket of my girlfriend in the past without any problems. I was just wondering if I could pull off the same trick with my dad's ticket. And what would happen if KLM would find out what I was trying to do.

In a way, it's all about revenue. KLM makes about 6500 USD on one ticket and in exchange I wouldn't mind having the miles for the trip. Whether it's my dad taking it, or whether it would be myself. Beyond all that, what is the difference between transferring my dad's miles to my account and him booking an award from his account for me? Surely they understand when it's all within one household no financial transaction is involved in the matter?

In theory, you are not allowed, and you will not get the miles credited.

In practice... I have heard of cases where it has worked.

However, if KLM thought you were doing this deliberately and in full knowledge that you were breaking the rules, they could, within the terms of FD, close your account and nab all your miles back.

Up to you as to whether or not you want to try it.

Suppose I will let my dad book his miles on his account and then just use his account for my award booking. I just hope that he remembers he owes me the miles a year from now...
