Best way to sign up for the mile & status match?

What's the better way to sign up for the mile & status match for someone who is not currently an FD member?

1) To fill out the form for non-members.

2) To sign up for a membership online, then submit the form for current members.

Does 2) give the possibility to start collecting miles counting toward the comp right away or does one anyway have to wait for the SW or RW comp card? Any other pros & cons?

I followed option 2) in November, and everything worked fine - I got my membership # online and used it before I received my basic membership card, which was then followed by the RW card 2 weeks later (I filled out the form for existing members).

The flights posted fine, and judging by the segment counter online, they do well count for the comp offer. Just make sure that you don't take flights you want to count for the comp before the date you sign your application.

I signed up to match to Silver status with my old Blue Wing Card in November.

My Silver status has been showing since late december when I log on to my account on the internet. However, I have yet to receive any new elite card. When I wrote to KLM to enquire about it, sticking to their pattern of inconsistency they advised me that I would receive the card comping my status AFTER the 6 month qualification for the mileage match.

Based on my experience, it may therefore be a better option to enroll as a non-member if you donīt plan to travel very shortly after enrolling.
