Because I always feel safe when travelling with them. Up until Air France come into the picture they always repected and rewarded my loyality to them as well.

In order to join in and answer the question "why did you use to choose KLM and not another airline?" ;)
KLM used to have excellent (ok, good) service, treated their elite fliers well, and had a very good FF program for a while (remember upgrading to C from any Y fare?). As well I used to live in the Netherlands and KLM was the airline of choice for my employer (which was rewarded by fairly large discounts on full-fare tickets). The KLM service level has gone downhill for the last 4 to 5 years (think only of 'Europe Select'), as well as the FF program, in particular for inexpensive tickets (to be fair that is the case with all airlines at the moment). Up until about 3 years ago I would choose KLM over other airlines, even if that meant a connection in AMS. However after trying the competition I realised that KLM is far behind, and I dropped down from Platinum to Silver doing 4 level flights in 2 years. Loyalty to an airline is a wonderful thing, but it has to come from both sides :( |
previous posts say it all, I so wholehartedly agree..... it is all so true... it has passed... KLM has become a degenerate Airline... since air france even its wonderful staff have seem to have lost their interest and dedication, very strange...
But besides the service the way we are punished for being platinum elites is sickening... I am still upset how FD was abolished... And the competition is better. Lufthansa, Singapore BA of course but they are rather more expensive on the routes I fly, on the whole has (much) better IFE, service, and food (and I am in love with LH internet)... Star alliance FF programs, BMI but even United are better then Lying Poo. Amd we will not WILL NOT even mention Europe Select. It is ridiculous. So why do we fly KLM? we don't. we look for alternatives... and hope, hope against all odds, that one day, AFKL will explode, and we will cherish our old beloved hinderdesk, we will hug the loungedragons and dance with them and bring them chocolates, while we wait to board our 450 euro return to LA, which we just have upgraded.... hihihihi dream on yocko |
Because it is one of the airlines which service regional airports in the UK, so I have no alternative if I wish to use my local airport. Using my local airport not only saves on commuter time, but by being a PE member, I get lounge access - a personal invitation to 'board now', and generally a better personal service at the airport than if I travel to LHR and become one of the many business travellers that day.
Because business class is cheaper with KLM/NW on most routes I do frequently Because other airlines (eg BA) do have much better business class services, but at a much higher price, and treat you like total dirt unless you are top tier on their frequent flier scheme. Sure - it's not all perfect, but it's a good compromise. Techno |
£200 with KLM from EDI via AMS or £700 for a direct flight.
We started using KLM simply on price in the first place. |
KLM is deteriorating considerably. They are no longer the classy airline they used to be. This process already started before the merger. :td:
Interestingly it seems to me that AF is keeping it's pretty good standard at the same level already for many many years. ^ Ohw by the way, I'm a Dutchy. So nothing nationalistic here huh? :) |
Well my reasoning as one who flies from a UK regional airport to connect to long haul sectors: Schipol v Heathrow - it's a no-brainer.

As a former Continental elite, I am disapointed with the website (doesn't tell you flight times or aircraft type or fare code, or even better let you select fare codes, elite seat selection, etc, etc) All things that were added to CO's website when they started listening to their Elites (on Flyertalk as it happens!) Many things that would make us loyal and happy without KLM giving away the farm! Oh yeah, one other huge one.....Elites should be allowed to upgrade from cheaper tickets! |

I fly KL because it's still almost always a cheap option and I barely fly enough to keep top status in one alliance, and much of that flying is paid for by me. And when I take trips back to the US, I like the free upgrades (just got upgraded on a nearly 6-hr flight MSP-ANC so I'm in a good mood!). But boy are they crap compared to how they once were. I was *this close* to switching to FD about three years ago, and I'm glad I didn't. NW may be awful in numerous ways but at least they respond sensibly to complaints and have competent people to answer the phone! |
I was once elite on FD, back when the cards carried the word "-Wing" on them.
Now, why fly KL? Because if I connect from DTW through AMS to LHR/LCY, instead of flying direct to LGW, I can accumulate an extra 1404 EQMs on every trip. Through WP, of course, not FB. Because I need DE koffie and tulip bulbs from AMS. Because it used to be absurdly cheap to book KL intra-Europe through NWA.COM. Because it amuses me to see the KL staff dealing with customers at the notorious transfer desks. "Nee, het is niet moegelijk..." Until I need something from them myself :( Because the in-cabin, as opposed to on-the-ground, over-the-phone, or on-the-net, service I find generally good. Because I like the cool blue shade of their planes and the cool blue seats. Because I love to see people sitting in ES peering over the tops of their free newspapers who may have paid - or, more likely, their organizations have - for their laughable seats. They all look like they take themselves so seriously, like British politicians. Because, astoundingly, KL op-ups me more often than NW...who have given me a very good share of op-ups over the last three years. See you in AMS next week at the transfer desk  RTS |

because I can get 100% elite qualifying miles by crediting to OnePass, and because on board service is generally quite good.

I was a PE for 2 years & GE for 1. Now I am a SE.
Personally I used to love flying KLM because of their easy connections from NCL, cheaper fares and most of all Upgrades from any fare. Since they stopped this I stopped flying them. Only time I fly KLM is when I have to take a flight to/from UK. I just don't feel safe flying on Amrican or UK airlines anymore. :( |
