About Ticket Vouchers

Due to schedule conflicts, I was unable to make a trip abroad. So, a family member had a ticket traded in that was originally going to take me to Ecuador. This created a voucher which I can exchange for another ticket. I think that's how it works. But I don't really know how the process works. It is valid for 1 year and there are a bunch of cryptic codes and numbers that I don't know the meaning of. I do not want to show pictures for privacy reasons and because I want to keep the information safe. The top left of the voucher has some sort of code and it does not mention what it is.

I was also sent another voucher that I assume can be used for seat upgrades, but I don't know if these vouchers can be saved up for points once I create a KLM account, or if they are rigid and can only be traded in for certain things. I just want to know what to do with them ahead of time before time runs out. They do not say when they were created and they do not say when the cut off date is, only that it lasts for 1 year. Of course, if anyone wants more information, within reason I can give more details about what's on it. Some things are obvious, like how much money they are worth.

Typically, you get a voucher number starting with 057 (for AF) or 074 (for KL). These remain valid for 1 year, from the date of issue. Within this time, you can use these to buy tickets/seats/etc. If your voucher is for lesser than the value of the payment, your voucher will get used up. If the voucher is more than the value of the payment, you will get a new voucher with the leftover amount.

If you have a voucher starting with 057, you can only use it on the AF website. 074 numbered vouchers can only be used on the KL website. But, you can call in to have them redeem the vouchers across the two companies.

I am not sure I understand what you mean by vouchers being saved for points? Vouchers are cash value, and cannot be used to purchase points.

Also, you can’t use a voucher to pay for just taxes. For instance, if you purchase a FB award tickets with your miles and have to pay a few hundreds Euros of various taxes, you can’t use the voucher for this.
But if you buy a revenue ticket, the voucher can be used for all the amount to be paid (including the tax part).

Because you posted this in the KLM forum, I assume that the voucher was issued by KLM.

It would be easiest if you rang KLM and book your flight with an agent on the line, and tell them you have a voucher you want to use for (part) payment.

Good catch! In a similar vein, if you use the voucher you can't use Bluebiz points either.

Thanks for letting me know about how points work. I don't remember when the voucher was created, so will be asking about that. I was wondering about the type of voucher I have. It says type S. This is not a type I have heard of before and was wondering what it means.
