When to arrive at AMS
 

Hi,

Flying out of Amsterdam to Los Angeles in September on a Saturday 9:50am. When should I be at the airport?
- US PAssport
- carry-on only
- business class
- KLM (if that makes any difference)?

I think in your case the biggest question mark will be the passport queue which is always unpreditctable since you never know if/how many machines are working which you should be able to use with a US passpor). Security lately has never been an issue for me (both Schengen/Non Schengen), being a business class passenger (regardless of airline iirc) will grant you access to the priority queue. Occasionally they are very eager to do a 2nd check on pretty much every bag though.

So it probably should go very smooth and fast (has taken me < 10min from the initial boarding pass scan to passing passport check including walking), but some of those factors can change the duration dramatically, especially the passport check if it goes full manual.

Living in NL I would happily do this arriving 1.5 hours before departure, certainly if you have BP on mobile and carry on only. As said the passport queue is the main thing but the times that took ages (2022) are afaik over. With peace of mind, do 2 hours in advance.

Having just flown around the same time of day/week couple week back, security was a non-issue, but the queues for immigration were very long and basically up to the point where the queue started in between the 2 security checkpoints, that's not an unusual view
I have no clue how long it would have taken as I have Privium but I suspect easily 30-40 minutes, add another possible 15-20 for security if your bag goes to secondary check.

1.5hrs should still be fine as long as you are ok with going directly to your gate after passing immigration (i.e. no lounge/shopping) but personally if I didn't have Privium I would go for 2hrs.

I personally would arrive 2 till 1,5 hours in advance with a leisurely stroll in walking pace.

Echo the above sensible advice. 1.5 hours will be fine, but for peace of mind, assuming that the OP is not very time poor, they should leave two hours, and then they can feel relaxed as well, even if the Immigration queues are bad (which they can be). Security has been good for a few years now, so the OP can safely assume that it will be reasonably quick in any event.

You of course get access to KLM lounge with that business class ticket.

In the early morning hours there is no decent food there at all, they start serving somewhat interesting choices closer to noon. Before that it's continental breakfast at a 2.5-star hotel

It's not worth to reserve extra time for it, 15 minutes are more than enough

From what I read security is not the possible problem but emigration (aka passport check). So reserving a security slot won’t make a difference with priority and might only steal a slot from someone else

2 hours.... for any flight if business class.
If all goes very fast, then some extra time in the lounge or shopping. If things are slow, then a bit less time of each.

Changed my flight to Sep 6 at 8:05 to CDG. Would assume that the advice of 1.5-2 hours still stands as passport check and security won't change (a possible secondary one for US flight won't happen).

No passport check AMS-CDG, it will happen in CDG instead. (I assume you are now booked AMS-CDG-LAX) 1.5 hrs would be plenty
You can book a slot at security but really not needed with priority, max wait time will be few minutes. (and 95% of the time 1-2 minutes or nothing)

Exactly, passport check does change - since it won't be done at AMS!

In other words, the passport check will now take place at CDG. Which means that you may want to leave a bit of time there to transfer, as queues may be long (And Skypriority access for immigration may or may not speed up things too much).

It is AMS-CDG-PHX > so 1.5h should be plenty? Great as every minute I can sleep longer is appreciated. Staying in the Amsterdam Hilton > 30m drive + 1.5h at AMS > leave at 6:05am :)
