Forcing an Overnight in AMS Results in Different Fares Depending on Booking Channel
I mentioned this phenomenon in another thread on refund issues, but as this is a consistent pattern I thought it deserved its own thread.
This is the itinerary I'm trying to book - I created a layover of less than 24 hours on the way back:
SFO - AMS. 4/15th, KL 606, departs 13:45, arrives 9:05 AM on 4/16th.
NCE-AMS, 4/23rd, KL 1254, departs 12:10, arrives 14:15
AMS-SFO, 4/24th, KL 607, departs 12:35, arrives 14:30.
AFAIK, the above should price as an open jaw from SFO to AMS, returning from NCE. There is less than a 24 hour overnight on the return so the fare should not bump up.
Booking the above on Expedia costs $595. Doesn't tell me the fare basis, but the transatlantic flights are booked in V and the NCE to AMS in L.
Same flights booked on klm.com costs $716. I can't see fare class or fare basis without paying for ticket.
Booking on Google Flights, I am given the price of $566 before I select each segment - then after I select the third segment the fare goes up to $2,627 and I am told that I have to book 3 separate tickets, and I am directed to klm.com to do so.
Anyone know what's going on? I assume this is some sort of married segment logic that Expedia ignores, and klm.com and Google Flights process in different ways.
My actual goal is to book with KLM directly at the lowest fare.

so if fare code is the most important criteria , then 100$ more is not a lot to ensure you have what you want

AFAIK some booking engines/OLTAs don't check fare rules and fare class availability until the final purchase, so this could be a "phantom" issue.
Being based in the USA, when I want to do an overnight connection (under 24 hours) with my return TATL segment to avoid a 6 am connecting flight, I call DL to ticket the segments I want. These connecting itineraries generally do not appear on delta.dumb when I search, even though they're legitimate connections with through fares available. Often availability for intraEU flights is better late in the day versus the early morning flights.
Have you tried to call DL/AF/KLM?

That looks like Expedia is doing something weird under the hood. Don't know if it's phantom or not, but it's not a through fare NCE-SFO as it would be on a real openjaw.
Fare construction on SFO-AMS//NCE-AMS-SFO should constitue from a SFO-AMS 1/2 rt fare and NCE-SFO 1/2 rt fare. Either can be a different letter but NCE-SFO needs to be the same letter and the same actual fare (unlike some other airlines, KL does not do end-to-end fare combinations within a leg)
Can you try and put this together on matrix.itasoftware.com? That would give us more insight on the actual fare construction. I wonder if Expedia does SFO-AMS r/t + NCE-AMS either ow or 1/2rt somehow

KLM quotes using fare basis VK6X46M1. It's the same price whether you accept a same-day connection at AMS or have an overnight at AMS, so the overnight stop appears to have nothing to do with it.
One immediately-noticeable difference between the two fare bases, on a quick look, appears to be that VK5X46B1 is "basic economy", but VK6X46M1 is "main cabin".
Booking into L class on intra-Europe flights is specified in the rules for both fares, so this is not an issue.

Looks like one is non-refundable, the other one is. Keeping in mind that, irrespective of fare rules, any KLM fare is refundable due to the covid-policy through end of June. Further differences, that I see from a quick glance, are about what metal the flights may be booked on - the second fare allows booking on VS for example.

Looks like one is non-refundable, the other one is. Keeping in mind that, irrespective of fare rules, any KLM fare is refundable due to the covid-policy through end of June. Further differences, that I see from a quick glance, are about what metal the flights may be booked on - the second fare allows booking on VS for example.

ITA is quoting the same price as Expedia, using fare basis VK5X46B1 in both directions (both SFO-AMS and NCE-SFO).
KLM quotes using fare basis VK6X46M1. It's the same price whether you accept a same-day connection at AMS or have an overnight at AMS, so the overnight stop appears to have nothing to do with it.
One immediately-noticeable difference between the two fare bases, on a quick look, appears to be that VK5X46B1 is "basic economy", but VK6X46M1 is "main cabin".
Booking into L class on intra-Europe flights is specified in the rules for both fares, so this is not an issue.

OK, I see. You've actually found the point - KLM multicity tool does not allow for selection of light fare. Neither does Air France if someone wanted to try.
OTOH Expedia only offers Light fare, when available.

As a result of the hive mind tackling this, the dysfunction is easy to describe:
On klm.com (or the app), if you book a round-trip itinerary, the booking flow makes you choose Light, Standard, or Flex. If you select multi-city, the booking flow does not give you that option and you are given the Standard fare.
So it is impossible to book an open jaw directly from KLM at the Light fare. Anyone disagree with how I have described it?
There is absolutely no benefit that I can see for anyone with elite status to book Standard over Light, as even silver status gives you an extra bag and free seat selection. To this means that KLM has collected a lot of money from elites who booked open-jaws on the KLM website, who received no benefit from having been forced into the Standard fare category.

Another way of looking at it could be that KLM saved a lot of people from having to buy two one-ways by offering an open-jaw as a Standard fare. I'd agree that it would be much better if they would allow you to choose Light, but in the end standard is what they are offering. Its up to the pax to make that booking if they deem the offer worth the money (or not).

Then it must have changed since I've last booked there, at the time you could opt for fares with baggage, however that resulted in a light fare with ancillary bag instead of a classic fare. I know it created problem for me because I needed a classic fare for other reasons.
