Is it really? I thought, looking at the map, that might still have been Villefranche-sur-mer. Oh yes indeed, I've just looked again, and that's homing in on the Vieux Port. Thanks for the correction.

I parked near Beaulieu-sur-Mer train station, which is the start point of the walk. It would be easier to take the train though, parking is a bit of a fiddle and not cheap (although you get a couple of free hours over midday). It would be worth buying the whole Côte d'Azur Rother book IMO. It's only 12-15 Euros.

Isn't it a bit dodgy taking pics of Greek military installations? I remember some issues in the past with tourists near airports.

Could be, but hey, they allow commercial aircraft full of pax with cell phone cameras to fly right past on the way to/from ATH. All you can see from up there is an airfield with a peculiarly short runway. It is not at all obvious that it is a military installation, and any warning signs are a bit hard to read from an altitude of several thousand feat.

Google maps indeed pixels the airfield, but everything you want to know about the place is a few clicks away online. Anyway, I doubt my pic will tell the Turks, Russians and Chinese anything they don't know already.

Thanks again for the Ferrat tips.

The Intertropical Convergence Zone is characterized by thunderstorms. The peaks of the cumulonimbus clouds easily reach 12 km (39,000 ft = flight level 390), often 14 km (46,000 ft), and occasionally much higher. The ITCZ shifts around seasonally, but KL's daytime AMS-JNB flight often passes through the ITCZ an hour or so before sunset, cruising at an altitude between FL350 and FL410. That means flying between the storm clouds, or sometimes right through them. Ideal for photography. I've taken that flight plenty of times, more pics coming up in due course.

The pic in my previous post was taken at FL350, and there were plenty of clouds well above us.

You were fortunate to land on the Oostbaan (RWY 04/22), which is the one and only approach that affords spectacular views of the center of the city.

I love this thread. Here are some of mine:

Near The Hague on arrival

Leaving LA, en route to AMS, in my last flight in the 747

One of the many great shots of Oslo I've taken in an OSL-AMS flight

Not strictly KLM but UX, since KLM doesn't fly into my home airport TFN, so when I go home I switch from KLM to UK in MAD

Golden Oldie: CIA-GVA, Lockheed L-749A Constellation, PH-LDS "Soerabaja", Sept 1955

The camera was probably a cheap Kodak or so; the negatives vanished over half a century ago; I used my cheap cell phone camera to take pics of the originals, so . . . the quality sucks. It is what it is, but I figure they are of some historical interest.
