KLM "Seat Not Available" meaning?

KLM "Seat Not Available" meaning?
I understand that airlines block seats for... reasons. But why would half the plane consist of unavailable and unselectable seats? And why the pattern?
It's a long-haul flight that's consistently been flying the same metal, so I don't think it's a matter of protecting them from down-gauge.
This is for a flight in a couple days, so I don't think they're reserving seats to sell for more $ later.
My thought was maybe load will low and they're trying to do 3 seats for 1, but somehow people have already selected a window seat in the 'unavailable' pattern. Or weight distribution, but still allowing a family of 5 to select seats together?
Today it looks like this, but yesterday, they had several full rows blocked instead of vertical blocks:

They may unblock those seats when the OLCI opens:

That tool seems interesting, but it doesn't match the seat map presented by KLM.com at all for this journey in terms of +/- or X/!X. Lots of discrepancies. It does show seats that have already been assigned, but doesn't differentiate between seats that show up as selectable or unavailable (and unoccupied) on klm.com.
I guess I'll have to do some field research to confirm my theory that KLM is trying to spread people out while also leaving bigger spaces for groups.

Same issue 4 years later
A friend of mine booked a flight AMS-SLC but he cannot book window seats despie being available. It is booked at KLM but the flight is operated by DL.
Some center row seats are bookable but not the free window seats ? Why ?
