KLM crew using iPad. Insight in PIL

Very interesting video on youtube about KL crew using the iPad during their preparation and flight.
Interesting to see glimps of the PIL with different codes and also MILUP. This purser took the effort to go down the list of Elites (and most likely VIPCORP) and greet them onboard.

I noticed that the app knows your miles balance. Depending on your balance it will offer an upgrade paid for with miles. In the air. Has anybody actually experienced this, like, ever?

Kind of strange that they post these, sort of internal promo videos, to YouTube. I doubt these are meant for anybody as, for example, it talks about what to do with spoiled meals and the like.

That's actually really well done, methinks. Key takeaway: It's enough to put the iPad in flight mode, turning it off is not necessary :)

That must be a Youtube special. Can't remember when I was last greeted on board by the purser. Years ago, that's for sure.

Lol, the video looks like sci-fi. I do not recall ever being greeted by a purser on a KL flight in Y only in J and very rarely :)

Very interesting, thanks for sharing!

"Hello, would you like a seat in Business Class? It comes with a stale sandwich and 2 inch extra legroom." "Sure, nice gesture!" "Well, that would be 12.5k for the remaining hour of flighttime. And we've just finished meal service."
:p

"But for another 7.5k miles we can offer you the spoiled food mentioned by Mr Xandrios" ;)

I flew AMS-CPH on Saturday, the purser came to greet me and tell me about the options that the IPads will be giving the crew in terms of offering upgrades paid by miles and apparently there's 'more to come' - whatever that means. I told him that while LH upgrades paid by miles after departure surely have my interest, if the price is right, I would never in my right mind spend miles on upgrading on SH. I think there's no need to explain..

Are also displayed on the ePIL the mysterious codes such as "PDST". See : http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/19805911-post11.html

Our customers greatly appreciate the personal service KLM offers on board, as was confirmed earlier this week when we were presented with the Skytrax award for Best Airline Staff Service in Europe. The iPad enables staff to offer passengers even more personal service and can, for instance, be used to update them more quickly on last-minute operational changes. Even in economically challenging times, it is very important to keep investing in our customers and personnel. Innovation is high on KLM’s agenda. Via this project we are investing in our customers and crew.

We also feel it is our responsibility to keep innovating in the area of sustainability. Ultimately, when the iPad replaces all the documentation that crew bring along on board, this will reduce weight and therefore fuel consumption”.
Peter Hartman, President-directeur van KLM

The pilot project saw around 100 cockpit and cabin crew using the iPad on board. Evaluation revealed that cabin crew using the iPad could respond more quickly and effectively to the personal wishes of passengers. For pilots, the iPad is an extra aid in ensuring smooth flight operations. Decisions can, for instance, be made more quickly because flight plans can be shared earlier. The full rollout of the iPads will take several months. By autumn of this year, all pilots, (senior) pursers and senior cabin attendants of KLC will be equipped with an iPad.

I suspect there is now an unwelcome chance of the purser pestering me to flog an upgrade (maybe the cabin crew will earn a commission, like on the so-called "tax free" sales?), whereas the chance of him or her coming to greet me out of a genuine desire to welcome me on board or thank me for my loyalty remains as low as ever. :)

Well, I do not mind if I get some faked interest - better than being completely ignored. And the KL staff on board is usually quite nice. So if they get an extra incentive to focus on frequent fliers, I might practice poker face replies of the sort "well, since you acknowledge that I'm one of your most loyal customers, wouldn't it be nice to reward me and upgrade me without having to spend my hard-earned miles?" :P

Beware! Or you will forever be marked as W T F * in the ePIL and consequently doomed to a lifetime of being ignored by staff.

KLM once used to be a very good airline, the crew now are old and some are overweight. The wear and tear is evident. We flew in J from SIN to DPS, it seems that the crew forced themselves to smile, they all looked so tired.

Then on our way back from DPS we had more old crew and especially one young one but she had attitude, would snap at you when ever you asked a question. Not nice at all.

Oh well, this was only to try KLM from SIN to DPS, as my first few flights with them were 20 years ago.
