I agree.

I couldn't say more about this in the other thread until this press release came out. A few weeks ago, on a BOS-SFO run we had LiveTV onboard running preliminary tests on the system and it seemed to run perfectly. As the system get introduced it is going to be run on a trial basis only. Hence the very limited options. I'd suspect that as the bugs get ironed out you will see more and more serviced being introduced.

Yes, this is not full internet access but kudos to jetBlue for being once again the industry leader in North America.

Let's keep in mind that most legacies do not even have AVOD on the vast majority of their flights...

While this is true, about North America, LH had a similar service for awhile and dumped it quickly because 1) it didn't work well and 2) customer comments were very similar to the ones here (i.e. yahoo mail and text messaging isn't all that exciting).

It'll be interesting to see if B6 does better with it. I remain skeptical that people will pay for services other than regular internet access.

Given my experience with B6's abysmal WiFi, at JFK, I don't have much confidence in this initiative.

I'm at JFK T-6 an average of 4 times a month, sometimes as often at 10 times a month.

I have never had any trouble with the WiFi at any gate, either in T-6 or the temporary terminal.

B6 acknowledges JFK WiFi issues

Perhaps the link below will interest you. Note the quote from a B6 employee acknowledging the WiFi issues...'nuff said.

Here's an engadget article on the intro of wireless, along with a screenshot and some more details:

I wonder how much weather will affect the reliability? B6 admits that weather affects the DirecTV signal a fair amount. But quite often (most of the time?) aircraft fly above the weather while at cruising altitude. From what I read in the Boston Globe story, the internet link is going to be ground-based, which would seemingly make it very susceptible to weather, depending on the frequency.

Obviously, it'll be very cool if it works...... but as has been said, managed expectations are the key.

That's why we only have 1 aircraft out fitted currently. We are going to work out the kinks in the system and make any necessary changes. As soon as I can snatch an offical tail number i'll try and post it on here. I was on 651 when I had LiveTV on board so something tells me that might be the aircraft involved. Not positive. Assignments aren't posted for the 11th yet as it is still 4 days away. The inital flight will be JFK-SFO.

If you have any info that would be excellent. I will be on an SFO trip late next week .

Preliminary assignments are out and it could be 1 of 2 flights. It could be flight 641 the 0800 departure or it could be flight 647 the 1825 departure. My guess is it will be flight 641.

"BetaBlue" will take its inaugural flight on the 11th. JFK-SFO flight 641 and SFO-JFK flight 644. As previously stated by JETBLUEFA, the tail number is 651.

I hope all the inflight crew members are really good with IT support. I can imagine an onslaught of tech questions for a lot of new users asking how to get connected.

And I'm guessing that most of the questions are going to come from all the BB users who read that they are going to have BB access in the air and then come to discover that they can't because they aren't using the 8820/8320s with WiFi. I also love that they are specifically calling out iPhone users (and that Apple was foolish enough to not provide granular control over those two different radios. I guess it wasn't aesthetically pleasing
