So is the risk in booking the one ways then that you might be screwed in an irrops situation? And are they able to link the records so that it is one check-in for baggage?

The carrier is unlikely to screw you on separate bookings, though it is possible. And, yes, bags can be checked through across separate bookings last I looked.

Thanks. I am trying to avoid a JFK connection at Christmas-time and also get a mint seat on the transcon segment, so it looks like booking 3-one way flights will probably be the cheapest way to do that since the return trip is bookable as one continuous trip.
