"A" is for Albuquerque!
At yesterday’s JFK and LSC Pocket Sessions, one of the questions floating around the room was: Where are we flying to next? That would be Albuquerque, New Mexico—our 77th BlueCity! We will be the only carrier to offer nonstop service from the New York metro area to this Southwestern hotspot that was founded in 1706 as a Spanish military camp. Today, it’s the largest city in New Mexico, rich with Spanish culture, a bustling business district, and beautiful scenery—not to mention it’s home to the world’s largest hot air ballooning event. At his annual State of the City address today, Mayor Richard Berry will announce our intent to serve Albuquerque, but we will officially announce this new route to the public tomorrow. Beginning mid-April 2013 (stay tuned for an exact date), our A320 fleet will operate daily service from JFK to Albuquerque International Sunport (ABQ), not long after the launch of BlueCity #76: Charleston, South Carolina and only a few weeks prior to the start of our recently announced routes from San Juan to Punta Cana and Santiago. Next year is already shaping up to be full of exciting new routes and destinations! Flight Schedule JFK-ABQ Depart: 8:25 p.m. / Arrive 11:04 p.m. ABQ-JFK Depart: 11:55 p.m./ Arrive: 5:57 a.m. The famous Route 66 runs through Old Town, an area not to be missed when you visit our newest BlueCity. Since 1706, the “heart of Albuquerque” has been the city’s cultural center, lined with adobe architecture, in Pueblo-Spanish style. Travelers can choose from a variety of museums, fine art havens, museums, and shops full of authentic southwestern jewelry made from turquoise; in fact, there’s even a Turquoise Museum that takes visitors deep into a turquoise mine. Old Town is also home to the most ancient church in the city, San Felipe de Neri, an adobe structure with iconic white towers that flag this part of town from a distance. Downtown Albuquerque is only five miles from ABQ, and your go-to for restaurants, nightclubs, music venues, and theatre life. The city’s main business district is also located here. Albuquerque recently poured millions into a long-term revitalization project, so think “new” when walking down the bustling streets and taking in the sights. Central Avenue is the main strip in the downtown area, and the longest commercial strip—18 miles—along Route 66. Let’s just say you won’t be at a loss for nightlife activities! There are three national and 33 state parks in New Mexico, so consider exploring some of the beautiful landscapes in this part of the country. From the Rio Grande and volcanos to gorgeous lakes and unique wildlife (maybe even a bald eagle, or two), there’s no shortage of things to see and if you head outside the city and into the wilderness. A list of parks can be found here, along with available activies like fishing, swimming, hiking and more. Chaco Culture National Historical Park in New Mexico even made National Geographic’s list of the most underappreciated national parks. Keep it in mind for a future southwestern excursion! |
Very nice...Surely, I hoping those route will be done extremely very well. Didn't CO/UA has flies EWR-ABQ a while ago?
Here the official release from B6: http://blog.jetblue.com/index.php/20...f-enchantment/ Another one: http://www.bizjournals.com/albuquerq....html?page=all |
Wish B6 all the best with this new route!
|
I hear B6 to be discontinued JFK-PIT, BUR-LAS as well and also, reduced BUR-JFK to a single redeye flight and increased to 6x daily RT LAX-JFK. B6 might want to be consider PIT-MCO/FLL as a replacement of JFK. This way those aircraft will freeing it up to fly elsewhere.

Excellent news for us in ABQ! Wish it were an early morning flight, but we will take what we can.
Enjoy! Kel:) |
Well, Guys, it's official!!!

Awesome!!!

Just wonderful. Now - sorry never to be satisfied - a prayer that it will be a successful enough destination that they'll consider BOS-ABQ. But then, historically, it's always been considered to be a bit out of the way.
Anyway, ^. Loving JetBlue service. |
ABQ is a very nice addition and represents the heartland of America which was missed by JetBlue before.
All the carriers together are covering the planet nicely. If there are customers, the airlines will make sure there is a flight available. |

Yes, PIT-JFK is being eliminated in February. They hae been only running 2 flights the past few years. I have driven to PIT a few times to get a JFK flight and bly B6. I also flew out of CMH before they pulled out of that market. They will still have 3 flights to BOS from PIT.

Yes, they will consider it. If B6 has be done extremely very well. If there is enough O/D passengers traffic through BOS hub. I'm pretty confident. However, it will take a while. I think BOS-ABQ would be good for business traveler.

Other carriers fly this route so there is still coverage. But considering Jetblue has Embraer's on order still, where are they putting all the newly arrived Embraers?

I'm excited at the new JFK - ABQ route. I fly LGA-DFW-ABQ about 4-5x a year, and would love to try this new route.
With flights from NYC to ABQ at about 280, can anyone venture a guess how much Jetblue would charge for the non-stop flights? I would certainly be willing to pay a premium, but not if the premium is something outrageous. |

I would certainly be willing to pay a premium, but not if the premium is something outrageous. Direct routes often cost less because you burn more fuel when you have multiple legs. JFK to ABQ is a very nice add to a location which hasn't seen non stop service before I presume. A lot of the United States have towns and cities that are developing and ABQ was one of those markets prime for growth. Hopefully in JetBlue's next phase we see more routes in other states with no coverage in those markets where JetBlue can find enough market share. JetBlue still has aircraft orders and so it will definitely be adding even more routes as time goes on. Both JetBlue and Delta serve Phoenix for $280 at times non stop. Price varies depending on date of course. JetBlue should be competing on existing costs and shouldn't be any higher than connecting carrier service. Obviously if the route is highly desirable they could potentially charge a price premium but I don't see that happening. And I don't expect anything significant. Just what I believe. |
Fare is $66 for a limited time

MCO - no AUS - doubtful BOS- possible LGB - maybe on the e190, but considering LAX is already saturated, i doubt it. |
Fares are well priced, I may end up on the first ABQ - JFK flight on 4/22 which currently has a ton of empty seats. The fare is $130, which is cheaper than AA which is $146 (and includes a stop at the beautiful DFW airport).
ABQ has plenty of space, if B6 wants to add more flights. I do think it's a odd expansion choice for B6, since I can't see much demand for more than 1-2 direct flights to ABQ from NYC/BOS. |
So I ended up booking the ABQ - JFK flight on 4/22, and they changed the time on me. The flight was originally scheduled to depart at 11:55pm arriving JFK at 5:57am, but now will depart at 11:10pm and arrive 5:12am. I'm kind of annoyed, as the flights on all days after 4/22 are showing 11:55, and there's a big difference to me between arriving at 5am or 6am.
Does anyone know why there was a change? |

A schedule change of 45 mins is nothing. Should be happy it is not several hours.
(I see sbm12 circling... :D) |
I may be annoyed, but its still the only non stop service that ABQ has to any NYC airport. I do wish the times were better, but hopefully we will see Jetblue expand service to ABQ and more/better schedules will be added. I'm a bit excited about taking the initial flight.

I booked this flight for May and I am pumped as well, especially with the point bonus. :D
Through Wednesday there is a $99 sale on ABQ-JFK flights, so I've booked another trip in May. The strange thing is, on my return flight there was only middle seats available. I wonder if the route is selling that well that they are 90% capacity a month in advance? |
Excellent!!!! I'm glad to hear that. I'm so extremely happy for it. I'm sure those route has done extremely very well. Give it some more competitive against UA out of EWR. Perhaps, B6 will have a second flight sometime in the future.

The flight was great, it's the only flight out of ABQ at that time (the last flight out is maybe 9pm) so security line was nonexistent. They had a little party to celebrate the first flight out and everyone received a goody bag. The bag was slightly disappointing, consisting of some Albuquerque tourism items (pen, pad, magazine, and some weird pasta) and a jetblue reusable cold cup filled with a luggage tag, earbuds, and green confetti. There was free champagne once we reached 10k feet, then they randomly selected 3 seats to win a few prizes (RT tix on Jetblue flights and an American Girl doll that had some connection to Albuquerque), which I didn't win but was a really nice gesture. The crew was friendly and seemed genuinely excited to be there. We had an on-time departure and arrived at 5am into JFK. The flight was about 80% full.

Has anyone been on this flight lately? I'm very curious as to how this will do.

:D The flight out is the last flight out of ABQ so there never is a wait for a runway. Security is a breeze, with your boarding pass and ID checked as you pass through the scanner. Unfortunately, the only store open in the sunport is the Hudson News located by the gate. The Jetblue staff only operates this flight and they are quite good. Check-in wait time is non-existent as there are 2-3 agents at the counter for the 150 or so passengers and several machines available to print your boarding pass from. The gate agents are eager to help and boarding usually runs smoothly. Flight attendants try to get service out of the way quickly so passengers can sleep, which is greatly appreciated. I take this flight so I don't have to miss work and can spend the day visiting family in ABQ. I wait for sales and get fares for about $110-130 each way. There are a few annoying features of the flight. 1) The flight is about 4 hours and leaves at 12, leaving you with only about 4 hours of sleep max. Arrival into JFK is 5:45 and everyone is bleary eyed. There's nothing Jetblue can do about this as flying time will always be 4 hours, but its a rough night. 2) Jetblue is using their older plane for this route, which feels a little worn down. The seat back TV's are small and old and the overall sense is that the plane needs an overhaul. I do love the legroom (I flew Southwest to ABQ on their new "Evolve" design, so noticed the legroom difference). 3) The ABQ - JFK flight is very dependent on the JFK - ABQ leg running on time. While this may happen 80-90% of the time, delays at JFK can sometimes be extensive and this is the only Jetblue flight of the day. I don't see Jetblue cancelling a JFK-ABQ flight even with a long delay, but no one wants to be at the Sunport at 2am waiting for a flight. I don't think this situation has occurred yet, but it may be something to keep in mind. Tip of the day at the Sunport - bring singles for the after-hours vending machine located nearby. It's old school vending machines that accept dollar bills or coins only (no cc) and drinks are $2 as compared to the $2.50-4.00 that Hudson News charges. |
I've done that redeye from ABQ and I must say that this New Yorker was even more pushy after arriving at 6AM. I hate mornings and it gets even worse without sleep :D

As a matter of fact, they really try to put new planes with sharklets on the longer flights to maximize fuel savings. |
