Are we all calm now? Until the nest time?

To my earlier point, Jet Blue's fare for Saturday 12/24 from BOS-STT (just as an example) came out at $859 one way.

If you booked the AA connection when it was first released (331 days out) you could get coach for the mid-$300's, and first class for mid-$400's. Now that things have booked up on the legacy carriers the coach fare starts at $500, while first class is about $750 (there some single seats for less, but most availability is at the $750 price).

Jet Blue is premium pricing because they have the only non-stop service, but to my earlier point, by putting their seats on sale after seats have booked up on the legacy carriers and prices have risen, it makes it easier for them to get away with this. An $859 non-stop versus a $500 connection, while obnoxious, does not seem as hard to justify as a $859 non-stop versus $300 connection.

It also means that it forces those of us that book their holiday travel early to either commit to the connection 331 days out, or roll the dice that Jet Blue won't screw us too badly if we wait for their seats to be released. For those that chose to wait to book this itinerary, it now seems like they made the wrong choice!

BeantownFlyer, for the past several years VX has done this. Right now, they are only offering fully refundable fares to Florida starting on December 16 through January 4. For example, on LAX-FLL, the lowest Main Cabin fare is $783 one way, Main Cabin Select is $749, and first is $1,749. They've done this the past 2 years, and when they do lower the fares, they generally do it in September and only down to the $400 level or so.

As an example, last year we booked B6 700 on Wednesday 12/30 LAX-FLL on the day booking opened for $189 one-way an included the free bag under the old fare structure. This year the fare including a bag is $279 for the same route on Thursday the 29th. We don't know if the fares will go down, but we're also not willing to wait so long to book for the holidays either. (We fly VX on the return as we're coming off a cruise and they have a flight at noon, which is currently $189 one-way).

Next extension is 6/5 at noon for flights through 2/15/17.

Is there any rhyme or reason to their system? I have looked at the historical data above and really don't see any kind of pattern. Does some number cruncher wake up and say "gee we could use some more money, let's open up another booking window?"

I'm assuming it's the same as other airlines, where it depends upon an aircraft utilization plan.

BeantownFlyer May 23, 2016 3:46 am

Err every other airline opens the window 331 days out not at random dates!

diburning May 23, 2016 2:40 pm

And every other airline uses a dumb placeholder seat map and then swap in the correct seat map later after they figure out which aircraft to use. Jetblue simply figures everything out before opening booking since they don't overbook.

And the others change your flight time (or cancel your flight entirely) quite regularly. This is very rare on JetBlue.

Based on the historical data in the wiki, I'm guessing we'll see another calendar extension in July. Anyone have insight on the specific date yet?

Good news!
