May 20, 2010 10:00 pm US/Eastern JetBlue Pilot Threatens To Crash Plane BOSTON (WBZ)

A JetBlue pilot threatened to crash the plane he was set to fly out of Logan Airport Thursday afternoon, a source has told WBZ NewsRadio 1030.

The pilot, who has not been identified, was taken into custody at Logan for allegedly sending an email to his girlfriend in which he said if they did not reconcile their relationship, he was going to crash the plane.

The officer was questioned by the FBI at the airport, and taken to a Boston hospital for a psychiatric evaluation.

They say "at no point were any customers or aircraft in danger" so does this mean they had a copy of the email and were just about to contact the authorities before the Ex did? Not a complaint with JetBlue specificially, that statement just reaks of "corporate spin" that any company might have given.

The big takeaway from this event is that once it began, it ended as well as anyone could ever hope.

According to other news sources (via Google News), this may be a rumor and the pilot was removed for health reasons.

I think they call the jetBlue PR person's response, "spin selling."

In Boston it's usually George Regan of Regan Communications who puts a positive spin on a company's greatest nightmare; in this case jetBlue kept that function in-house.

Lets hope the pilot is OK, as is his friend.

I wonder if the delays at JFK threw him over?

Mental health surely would fall under "health" and probably something that JB can't even publicly comment on.

JetBlue pilot taken to MGH for evaluation
Had told woman he might harm self
By Travis Andersen
Globe Staff / May 21, 2010

A JetBlue pilot was placed in protective custody yesterday at Logan International Airport and brought to a city hospital after he told a woman he might harm himself, a law enforcement official said.

The official, who asked not to be identified, said authorities approached the pilot in a waiting area after he sent some type of “electronic communication’’ to the woman. The official could not say if the pilot was about to board or fly a plane. The incident occurred at midafternoon, the official said.

The pilot was taken to Massachusetts General Hospital for an evaluation and was not under arrest last night, the official said.

That's quite scary. I have often wondered why we don't see more EgyptAir type suicide missions, particularly given the bad economy and how poorly pilots are paid.

TSA says pilot never threatened to crash plane....

If one can believe the TSA:

It was on WCVB at noon today that he made the threat "to harm himself" via text to a female friend. She reported it and the employee was taken into custody by Mass State Police at Logan Airport (Boston).

caviarwire May 21, 2010 10:56 pm

this could have happened to people in any profession... aviation, bus, railroad,
container ships, etc, etc......

by the way, what is the race and marital status of the pilot in question?

H3A3H3 May 22, 2010 4:39 am

Latest media reports are that the pilot was planning "to harm himself in a significant fashion." Thankfully he is getting help.

An armed pilot at the helm of a jetBlue aircraft. That doesn't sound very safe to me. Good work by those who circumvented a potentially tragic event from occurring.

I wish him the best. Got to be tuff. One thing for sure he will be removed from the FFDO program.
