IFE Disabled

There are reports on various forums, including here at FT, about IFE being disabled in response to the NW incident. Has Jetblue been doing this? Perhaps just on the international flights? Anyone flying today able to verify if LiveTV is live? Maps?

Dieuwer Dec 26, 2009 7:26 pm

I believe the security issue is "LiveMaps". I hope they can remove the maps application and keep the IFE on.

JetBlue customer service tells me that IFE is not disabled and that as yet, TSA haven't given them orders to change anything. I'm presuming some other FTer will report back before I next fly in about 24 hours.

My understanding is that IFE disabling is not being mandated by TSA, but rather was something that United did on it's own, and only on international flights coming in to the US. The reasoning was, like said before, to prevent someone from seeing the map.

Seems like UA has gone even farther then that

Any and all flights from an international origin to the US will have IFE disabled. Completely disabled. That includes the TVs, Radio, and Internet on Beta Blue. This is a TSA Mandated Directive. Domestic service will remain unchanged for the time being. If we had a way to remove the moving map feature I'm sure we wouldn't have to completely disable entertainment system. Because we can't disable individual channels we have to disable the entire system.

Because telling people to sit down and put away everything including your magazine 1hr before landing won't give people a good idea of where they are?

On many international flights, don't they already have to disable the LiveTV system once the plane is over ocean? I know in those circumstances JetBlue provides movies which are stored on the plane rather than being transmitted. I'm wondering why they aren't just doing the same thing in this situation, since watching a movie doesn't give you information as to where the aircraft is located (unless the moving map system is also available in that situation - I'm not sure since I've never been on one of those flights).

The TV isn't disabled on international flights- the quality degrades and eventually goes out as you leave the coverage area. Movies are free from the beginning of any international flight, but the TV is activated so that when the aircraft enters the US people can watch TV.

This will cost lots of $15 vouchers. What a joke!

This was just posted on Gawker:

JetBlue Pilot's Agonized Announcement: The TSA's Draconian Reactionary Rules

Ever since the TesticleTerrorist succeeded in nothing but scorching his balls, word spread of the TSA issuing reactionary regulations. Proof: this flight announcement recorded by none other than Vimeo's founder and DOTD-nominee Jakob Lodwick, which he posted to his blog.

All of these new procedures have been rescinded. IFE will now be available on all flights both domestic and international.

Nevertheless, they may be reinstated.
Is B6 going to work with the IFE software maker to remove the LiveMaps feature?

It appears there have been changes to the Security Directive with respect to flights with an international origin.

In light of the updated SD (security directive), has JetBlue turned IFE back on for flights with an international origin?
