That would have really sucked if it was for someone connecting to a flight in another Asian country. Most of them have mandatory death penalties for drug trafficking.

I was thinking a bit centric to the destinations Northwest Serves Ex NRT. It's not actually most. I think this these are the ones however.

Bangladesh, Brunei, China, India, Indonesia, Iran, Iraq, Kuwait, Laos, Malaysia, Oman, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Thailand, UAE, and Vietnam

I'm not sure about that list. What's your source?

Amnesty lists sixteen Asian countries as imposing death penalties for some drug offenses, but only lists seven as having mandatory death penalties for specified drug offenses (Brunei, India, Laos, Thailand, North Korea, Singapore and Malaysia):
