Yakudoshi - anyone else suspect there might be something in it?

Some of you will know that last year was an unbelievably crummy one for me.

I knew that 2003 coincided with a some particularly difficult years that came under this - but I never checked again as I assumed that, as with men, yakudoshi years would be reasonably spaced apart.

I just checked to see when my next one was due and realised it was last year. And getting back to a normal life will also be tough, so this year isn't likely to be a walk in the park either.

At least this was my final yakudoshi (and easier, emotionally, than the last one as I had a partner to support me)

Anyone else think that there just might be something in this?

The yakudoshi years are:

For men: 24, 41 & 60 - (25, 42 & 61 in Shinto which adds a year)

For women: 18, 32 & 36 - (19, 33 & 37 in Shinto)

So I guess that means you have 5 years in which to put money aside for a two seater convertible sports car.

Unfortunately the clock keeps ticking forward no matter how much I resist it! And I have never been the car type.....;)

Yup, I've had some bad yakudoshi. I was also told by lots of Japanese friends that the years before and after are not so great, which leaves women with a pretty bad string in their thirties! Almost makes turning forty seem palatable... (well, it certainly beats the option of *not* turning forty).

Reading the article you linked, I do not see 60 listed. Did you just add that to scare the likes of me, who have it coming in the next few years? ;)

I apparently made it through the "major calamity" year of 42 without too many consequences as far as I can recall. Or maybe I have just blocked it out.

You're welcome to ignore it, but the article does say

"At the Dazaifu Tenmangū shrine, moreover, the taiyaku ages are defined as 25, 42, and 61 years for men."

Which is 24, 41 and 60 under the Western method of describing your age.

The extra Yakudoshi year of 60 (61 in Shinto) is not acknowledged everywhere. I suggest you ignore this thread and pretend you never read it.

MrLapLap's only yakudoshi was unquestionably the worst time in his life so far.

Dazaifu.........I seem to recall that name! If anyone is in the neighborhood they should go to this shrine and then be sure to visit the National Museum just up the hill.

I was lucky the first time I tried one of these - on my very first visit. But now I understand them better I'm just not brave enough to do these anymore.

I salute you!

I was becoming more and more fascinated by Japan and its culture until hearing of yakudoshi years. Especially as I am now in one of them.

So far, so good. But I'm planning to be in Japan a couple of times before the yakudoshi period ends; perhaps I should reconsider my travel plans.

Or not. 24 and 41 (Western) were both very good as I recall; plenty of good times, plenty of travel, and happily in love. Though not with the same person, for you inquisitive types.

Gadzooks, am I in a reverse yakudoshi cycle where I'm going to be swept off my feet by someone this year?

Pickles Jan 19, 2008 9:47 am

Sounds like hogwash to me. 24 and 41 weren't memorably painful for me. Frankly, I don't think I have had a "bad" year, at least not in the Queen Elizabeth II sense.
