Not sure about that, but I do know that certain credit cards bring discounts in most of Asia.

most attractions only give discounts to Japanese k-12 students, but some will give discounts to college students (many would insist on Japanese university ID). those who accept the ISIC card do exist, but are not the norm.

If you are going to spend time in Tokyo, consider buying the GRUTT pass ^ . You can spend a week there and never have to spend more than the 2,000yen cost of getting it as it covers entrance fees to so many museums and galleries.

There are discount schemes available relating to many travel tickets. For instance, the Hakone Free Pass comes with a list of admission discounts for the Hakone area. I understand this is true with some of the Kansai region rail cards too.

Most attractions have a student discount price, but it is almost always intended for kids in school uniform. You will see them everywhere.

I escorted some college student relatives to Japan a couple of years ago and they were paying the full adult price almost everywhere. It doesn't hurt to ask, but don't expect it to happen very often. I think I recall they got in on their university identifications at the Edo-Tokyo Museum, but that is about it.
