If you love Japan you’ll find a way to go back. If you don’t, you will have had enough anyway.

Yes, you could sprint around the country for two weeks but it will be exhausting and superficial, at odds with the fulfilling experience you’ve said you want.
Thanks, that's good advice. I've always preferred staying places a bit longer while travelling and having time to just wander, explore, and get familiar with neighbourhoods. Totally agree, I get nothing out of just rushing between the popular tourist spots to check those boxes off before leaving.

Of those times of years you visited, which were your favourite?

Hi

Probably late November or early December as weather is nice and generally good. The winter illuminations are beautiful.
have not seen the full autumn folliage ( may need to be a little lucky on timing )
Not a bad time to visit Japan ( summer can be hot & humid and late summer may have a chance of typhoons)
regards

Visa related question…

Couldn’t really find a straight answer googling around so thought I’d ask here:

is there some restriction on entering+leaving+entering Japan in relatively quick successions on a tourist visa (getting new visa every entrance)?

I hold a Canadian passport and plan to enter Japan on Nov 2, flying in from Korea, and fly out on Nov 4.

however I may enter Japan on October 20 depending on last minute availability on JL/ANA from JFK. I will then be leaving for Korea on Oct 21 after spending a day in Japan.

Will this earlier entrance in Japan somehow prohibit entering Japan again in November, assuming my passport/profile is squeaky clean?

There should be no problem with your two short visits.

As a Canadian passport holder, you do not need visa for entry to Japan as a tourist planning to stay in Japan less than 90 days.

Koyo question...

Given the vast number of foliage prediction websites (n-kishou, weathernews, tenki etc.) and the quite different predictions of peak foliage dates between them - even for more "close-in" locations such as Hokkaido and Tohoku - does anyone have recommendations on which ones are more "reliable"?

Or perhaps more diplomatically phrased, any insights as to the slants of their forecast philosophies for example if the precise definition of "peak" varies from forecaster to forecaster?

I am having a big problem as my flight leaves at 10:25 in mid February from Haneda. I booked a hotel specifically as it was on the airport limo pickup list, but they don't start pickups until 10:30. I am staying at the Shinjuku Washington Hotel. I thought I could take the monorail, but I don't see how to get to it. My room is non refundable, unfortunately. Am I stuck taking a taxi? I have one big suitcase and a carryon. Advice is welcomed.

I recommend Google Maps for this kind of route finding. If you like the bus, you could walk (10 min) or take a cab to the Shinjuku Bus Terminal and ride the Limo bus from there. Schedules and maps are all available from Google.

You need to go to the bus terminal. Airport buses run from morning to night; just because one from your hotel only has limited hours doesn't mean that applies to the entire system.

Here's the timetable in English. You will see many buses depart from Busta Shinjuku (the bus terminal) starting at 5am. Your hotel is an 850m walk to the bus terminal (~10 minutes). If you are physically unable to walk there, take a cab — but that would be silly if you're able bodied.

If you want to take the monorail, you need to GET to the monorail — which would involve going to Shinjuku Station, taking the Yamanote line to Hamamatsucho and then boarding the monorail to the airport.

Just walk to the bus, my dude.
