Grand Hyatt in Nihongo
No, sorry, Hyatt has not opened a new property in the previously unknown town of Nihongo.
What is the pronunciation of the Grand Hyatt in Japanese -- ga-ra-na-du hai-ya-tu, maybe? When I get in a cab at Tokyo station (without having yet checked in and gotten cards from the hotel), it'd be nice if the driver knew where I wanted him to take me. arigato gozaimasu et cetera. |

In several rides this past summer, from Tokyo station and from Shibuya area, had no problem with Century Tokyo Shinjuku, without trying any Japanese pronunciation.
My experience is that major hotels are known. |
Alternatively, print this out and show it to the driver. It shows the car entrance that can be a little tricky.

We Japanese do not pronounce 'r' correctly, so just say ' gu(goo)-land-hyatt-roppongi. :)

JR It is definitely worth saying "ROPPONGI" in addition to Grand Hyatt, because a novice taxi-driver might not know that there is more than one "Hyatt" in Tokyo. And then you might end up at the Park Hyatt or Century Hyatt.... over in Shinjuku. Similar problems can occur with other hotel names in Tokyo Palace / Grand Palace (relatively close to each other in Otemachi/Kudan) Park Hotel / Royal Park Hotel (very close to each other in Shiodome) I'm sure there are other examples, but it would probably not be helpful to read lists of easily confusable hotel names. Better to remember the hotel name and the name of the area of town Better still - carry a business card or copy of the hotel address and/or map to the hotel. |
Or better still, just ask for Roppongi Hills (hi-ru-zu). Even the vagarious cabbies of Tokyo know the location of this enormous phallus.
Add on Hyatt Hotel (Hai-atto Ho-te-ru) if you wan the cab to pull right up in front of reception. |
