NRT to/from HND Connection Time
 

I understand the bus takes 75 minutes between the airports, but what is the practical minimum time for connecting between the two? I will be on two different tickets and PNRs.

I'd give yourself 4 hrs+.

Time clearing Japanese immigration and customs can be lengthy if you arrive at the wrong time. Busses leave every 20 minutes or so. Rush hour traffic in and around Tokyo is what could slow transit. The 75 minute travel time is just a bit excessive if there's no slowdowns en route (I've taken it in the evening with no traffic and it took around an hour).

If you are arriving during rush hour, you could take the N'Ex to Tokyo central (I think 60 minutes travel time, up to 1/2 hr wait for a train, take the local circle line train one stop (or more) to the station for the HND monorail. Travel time for this route would be 90 minutes + waiting.

There's also a train from HND to NRT. Two to three per hour. The trip is around two hours. Most needs a connection on the way. The cost, as advertised on the web site of the railway operator -- Keisei -- is 1,560 yen. Much cheaper than 'limousine' buses or Narita Express connections. The train station is on the basement floor at HND and at Narita, it's the regular Keisei station, also on the basement level.

I may decide to overnight before continuing. I know there are several hotels near NRT, but are there any good ones near HND?

I've never heard of an airport hotel at HND. Are there any? I have to wonder myself.

It's probably better to come to downtown -- roughy 30 minutes on monorail to Hamamatsucho station, which is linked to the JR Yamanote loop line that covers pretty much major points in Tokyo. Or on Keikyu train service, you can also get to Shinagawa station, also a JR Yamanote loop station, where I do know there are several big hotels.

I think there are a few hotels on the monorail line in the Odaiba area, esp. like a JAL hotel.

What I don't like about this monorail is, if you have lots of luggage, it can be really cumbersome going up and down escalators and stairs at Hamamatsucho.

in looking at some flights, it looks like we will go thru hnd to kix. what would be the cost of nrt-hnd [ how much money should we change?] thanks

Y1,560 on Keisei according to Chiangi.

Y2,510 by Keisei Skyliner to Ueno/Nippori, connecting to the JR Yamanote line and the monorail.

Y2,940 by NEX NRT-Tokyo + about Y150 to Hamamatsucho on the Yamanote line + Y400 for the monorail to Haneda.

Y3,000 by limousine bus, credit cards accepted.

Take the limousine bus if you have luggage. The Keisei connection to Haneda runs as a subway and then a local express train, with limited room for luggage; not a viable option at rush hour.
