Narita International Airport (NRT) - Layover & Hotel
Where to stay overnight and what to do nearby
Where to stay overnight and what to do nearby
Narita Airport (NRT) is approximately 60 km from central Tokyo. It is blessed with numerous hotels, many with shuttles (served from the terminals' bus platforms) and often at surprisingly low rates for Japan. Some of these hotels offer free shuttles into the nearby city of Narita (Narita-shi).
If you have a few hours (say six or more) Narita offers many things to do--the Narita-san Shinsho-ji Temple and Park is beautiful and pleasant and on weekends one often sees performances of traditional arts and music. The Omotesando street leading there is lined with shops and restaurants, as well as a local museum.
See Mike Newman's Narita Layover Pages for many things one can do.

Honestly, UA Y food is quite decent. I had chicken karaage out of NRT on a recent flight, which was tasty (not crispy like on the ground though) - much better than anything NH has ever served me. The quantities weren't huge, but I was satisfied.

Hi All,
I'm traveling from LAX-NRT-BKK on 1/10. I have to stay overnight in NRT on 1/11. I land 4:15pm, and leave the next day on 10:00am.
So I figure I have a good 8 hour stay in Japan. Where do you all suggest I do with my time?
If I stay in Tokyo (i.e. Shinjuku or Shibuya), I can theoretically leave from the Shunjuki station taking Narita Express at 7am.
What would you recommend I do while I am there?
Thanks.
Alex

Hi Alex,
My wife and I do it all the time. We always stay overnight in Narita on our way from Manila to Washington, D.C., via ANA. We always stay at Narita Mercure Hotel. They have free transportation to and from the airport. The hotel is surrounded by good inexpensive restaurants, train station, buses and more. After check in, you can take the bus around the corner to Aeon Shopping Mall and spend the afternoon and evening walking around. One interesting place is the Japanese Store where everything is 200yen. Hope this is helpful.

Is there a store similar to Tokyu Hands or Loft within NRT? or nearby?
I have a few hours layover at NRT and want to explore/shop but can't venture into Tokyo.

There's a shopping mall (Aeon) in nearby Narita town, no Loft or Tokyu Hands though.

If you only have 3 hours, for instance, you should probably stay put at the airport. Head to the landside shopping area. There may not be a Loft or Tokyu Hands, but there's a lot of interesting little shops that collectively may fulfill your needs. There's also a small Mujirushi store at NRT, which may be of interest to you although I realize the concept is a little bit different. Shops at NRT don't jack up prices like they do at American airports.

The main sight in Narita is Shinshoji temple, but it's a good walk from the station.
Next time, try to get a longer layover.

Unagi places
Does anyone know what place/s are the best to get Unagi in the area? I was doing some searcher and I've been reading Surugaya is one of the places but I am hearing other places too. I was thinking of going to an Unagi place for lunch one day. Hopefully someone here can help. Thanks

I've been Surugaya twice and their unagi was very good and traditional.
Good thing is you don't wait in line but get the ticket with numbers for waiting and they can tell you when to come back. You can explore the area for a while.
There's some other famous places but I've never been to, sorry.

Hi all,
We are flying from Australia to Europe via Japan later this year. We're already booked in a hotel SAS Radisson Narita which is included cheap with the airfare. We arrive Monday at 7 pm and fly out Wednesday at noon on the way out and fly in at 10:30 am Friday and fly out at 8:15 pm Saturday.
My husband already has a list of camera shops to visit in Tokyo. I want to buy myself lots of good quality origami paper and also a large simple blue and white cotton kimono.
Any recommendations on where to go?
Recommendations on other things to do with our time would also be welcome - we're thinking the museum and the early morning fish market. We've also read that Narita has nice old temples and things and plan that for the morning we fly out.
Thanks!
Audrey

On the way back, however, I suggest booking a place in Tokyo, because you will have Friday afternoon and evening and most of Saturday in the city, and it would make no sense to go back to Narita just to sleep.
Depending on your price range, your hotel in Tokyo may have a direct bus, or you can take your choice of bus or train. See your guidebook for suggestions.
The fish market is over-rated, in my opinion, and what there is happens in the wee hours of the morning. I don't know what museum you are referring to when you say "the museum." Tokyo has lots of them. You will probably have time for one at the most.
Since you are not going till later this year, I suggest buying a guidebook to Tokyo, which will include Narita, and studying it thoroughly so that you can make the best use of your limited time.

Do you happen to know if they are busy on weekdays? How long are the lines? What would be the best time to go? What would you recommend getting? And how do I get a taxi on the way back?

Kesei Main Line and Narita Line
Are the train tickets the same for the lines above? Also, are the lines above in the same station at the airport or they have separate stations?
I'm thinking about taking the two trains into Narita for lunch. I know in Narita, the stations are separate from each other, not sure about the station in the airport.
