Where to stay overnight and what to do nearby
Narita Airport (NRT) is approximately 60 km from central Tokyo. It is blessed with numerous hotels, many with shuttles (served from the terminals' bus platforms) and often at surprisingly low rates for Japan. Some of these hotels offer free shuttles into the nearby city of Narita (Narita-shi).
If you have a few hours (say six or more) Narita offers many things to do--the Narita-san Shinsho-ji Temple and Park is beautiful and pleasant and on weekends one often sees performances of traditional arts and music. The Omotesando street leading there is lined with shops and restaurants, as well as a local museum.

NRT 5 hr layover
I have a 5hr layover in NRT (arriving from LHR and going to HKG).
Any ideas on how to pass the time other than lounges?
If I recall correctly going into Tokyo is too far.

Heya, 5 hours just isn't enough time to go into Tokyo, there are some interesting things out in Narita town according to posts i've seen in the Asia part of FT Travel, do a search there.
The airport i've found can be quite boring, there is free internet access through Yahoo, as well as at the UA RCC lounge. You then could easily pass 5 hours on Flyertalk

If you are staying in the airport, clear customs at least. Much better food options landside. There's also a great observation deck in T1.

Going to Narita town on a short layover
I have a five-hour layover and I've seen threads in here recommending catching the local train from the airport to Narita town and walking around for a few hours.
How does this work? I know U.S. passport holders need no visa so your passport is sufficient to leave and enter the airport.
But would you have to pay the departure tax since you "entered" and "departed" from Japan? Or since you already have the next boarding pass from your previous airport, there is no departure tax?
How much time would you allow for this excursion as far as train time and walking time?

Not recommended by many, even some Tokyo residents. I'm in NRT 2 times every other month and There is plenty to do there. Now, if you aren't in a airline lounge that makes things a little less interesting. Good enough shopping, showers , e-mail etc. I know that food and drink are a bit pricey.
You won't have much time if you go to town, Take and ovdernight if you are so inclined. Where are you connecting to?

I believe that if you search the Northwest forum you will find explicit instructions on how to accomplish this.
1000 yen and you are in Narita City. Go to tourist office also explained in instructions.

True, I've even seen stuff on a flight attendent forum about quickies etc. I guess, but I would want time for a meal and good Japanese bath!

I arrive in from BKK at 6 am and have a noon flight to JFK, both on JAL. It probably is a better idea just to get a day room but I thought I'd explore the idea of going in to Narita.

The train to Narita city takes about 10 minutes and costs about JPY 420-500 round trip. The Keisei train runs more frequently than the Japan Rail one (about 3x per hour vs. approximately once hourly) so check the schedule before deciding which line to go on. You want the local train and NOT the Skyliner or the Narita Express which will both bypass Narita.
As you leave the Narita customs hall, the information booth will have some information and maps on what to visit in Narita city.

Transit through NRT / Tokyo layover Customs question
I'm on my way to China, but I'm going to spend about three days in Tokyo. As part of my trip to China, I'm carrying nearly a suitcase full of gifts for relatives and friends.
I'm a little concerned though as I will have to go through Customs at NRT. The value of all the goods is only about $400 or so, but the volume is a good sized suitcase (lots of cheap big things for kids, etc).
So, will I be taxed on these when I get to Japan, or do I just explain that Japan is not my final destination (or does that matter?)

I was just there for a few days as well, but didn't pay close attention to how much you are legally allowed to bring in. But, since there was not much checking at customs, I doubt that it would be a problem. Just be nice and explain that they are gifts for your family in china and I doubt that they will give you any hassel....have a great trip!

Any recommendations for a layover of 5 hours at NRT?
I'll be arriving next Sunday, 12/12 on UAL from HNL at 1:35pm, then connecting at 6:45pm UAL to HKG.
Is there anything worthwhile that can be done in this time period in time to get back through security and customs at NRT in time to make my flight?
Any thoughts or others who have had a similar experience?
